It's been awhile, was running too good for too long. So I have a question....

Got some issues starting a couple days ago. It did, began to warm up, ran like poop, and shut itself off. Isn't happy trying to restart it.

Mechanicals seem fine, feeling like it is spark related. Just running through some possibilities, since it doesn't feel like starting.

MSD 8222 Epoxy filled coil, about 3 years old, no obvious signs of trauma.

Specifications on Holley's website say it is a 0.7 OHMs coil on the primary, 4.5K OHMs on the secondary.

Is that a hard number? Wiggle room? Can't seem to find an answer.

Multimeter here says 0.5 OHMs primary, 6.4K OHMs secondary.

What say you guys, good or replace?

Why not visually check the spark, pull a wire off, plug a plug in the wire and see what it looks like with the engine running. The resistance readings could be the result of a questionable accuracy of your meter.

You didn't read the lesson. The engine isn't running. Doesn't want to start.

What system are you running

Mopar type ignition system / Chrysler distributor with ballast resistor and Ignition module ECU

Or

MSD CD Type Ignition Box

Hey Bee,

We have chatted about my ignition before, I am running the Progression Ignition distributor, which has no external box, it's a fancy R2R basically, bypassed ballast, got full 12v power on both sides and at the coil, good battery.

Been running fine, sat a few days, then went to start, was rough, like not firing all 8, then just shut off. Tried to restart a few times, but it just kept quitting.

After checking any mechanicals, I'm kinda down to suspecting coil or the Progression so was just throwing the meter on it and checking the values, which seem out of spec.

Using a digital ohmmeter to measure coil resistance will give erroneous readings. About all you can is measure supply voltage to the ign system. If they measure correctly, you should probably start substituting parts.

I agree with Geoff

I have measured plenty of ignition coils with an ohm meter and they measured within spec when cold and where actually bad , especially when the coil got hot

If you have any spare coils laying around , just throw one on the car and at least see if the car starts and idles

Thanks Bee. This one measures out of spec when cold. Surprisingly I do not have a spare laying around, I know that’s SOP and I should. I’ll grab one for sure and test that next.

A few people have discussed failure with those, and they seem to end up cracking at the bottom.. I'd take a look

Thanks, yeah have noticed that there are quite a few failures with the 8222. Thought mine had a crack, but on closer observation, more like a scratch.
