my 1970 belvedere project

One thing id do before replacing the floors is to find out what caused them to rust out with the rubber floor out it would be easy to water down the car and check for leaks. i had a 69 coronet that had that rubber mat looked like it was brand new but i pulled it up the floor was paper thin i fgured somebody washed it alot which also was bad for the floor. imdoin a 69 rr mine arent as bad as yours but will need replaced eventually,

good idea...i washed it the other day and it looks like its leaking around the front window...the seals old and wore out...a 5 min wash filled the passenger floor board pretty good...and from there it runs to the rear...same thing happens on drivers side all the seals and weather stripping is junk on my car..the trunk seal is same way..and water just sat in trunk and floors..the old guy that had car was in wheel chair and couldnt take car as well. and let water sit..

Another issue you should look for as far as water leaks Josh, and these cars are known for it is; leaks from your plenum's in the cowl. Under your outer cowl (panel in front of the windshield-behind hood) there is two air plenums for your cabin vents, one on each opposite site. They protrude up about 3" from the inner cowl. What happens is that leaves, dirt, pine needles and whatever else collect around them, rotting them out. What happens then is, when water goes down through your slots in the outer cowl it flows down across the inner cowl to the plenum's. If there's holes, the water continues right down into your vent boxes then onto your floor.

I've seen folks chalking up water leaks from that as leaks from the wiper pivot seals or windshield seal. Also seen cars with duct tape over the vent openings because guys think it has something to do with the seal around the vent butterfly in the vent box. Good way to check is turn the water hose on halfway and let water flow into the slots of the outer cowl. See if you have water coming in at the vent boxes.

Unfortunately if they are leaking, there is no real easy way to fix them right. The outer cowl must be drilled out and removed, requiring removal of the hood, fenders, doors, trim, winshield to get to all the spot welds. Also requires you to melt out the lead at the A-pillar and grind out the welds under it. I've seen folks say the heck with the vents and cut a piece of plastic or metal and seal the vent box up to keep the water out or even get up to the inside of the plenum's by removing the vent boxes and then try to fix by means of fiberglass sheeting or trying to patch in metal. Those would be a temporary fix.

Just thought i'd throw that out there.

thanks for info..ill try that today and see what happens...im noticing with these b bodys its never the simple thing or the easy fix..lol...its always the pain in the *** jobs that needs fixed..prob from previous owners neglect and not wanting to fix..i hope its not the plenums

No problem man. Just wouldn't want you to see you wrap up on your project, be ready to hit the streets fresh and clean and then a thorn in the side like leaks under your dash hit the brakes on ya.

If it was easy, everyone would do it. These cars will test you, but the end reward is great. Just remember what's in store once you got her the way you want her and you're hitting the pavement.
