Re: COOL NIKS GPS Speedometer, Odometer, Pedometer Mileage track

My android "smart" phone, won as a door prize a couple/few years ago, has spent all of its life at home, being the fact that I use an older "stupid" cell phone for my day to day stuff. Well today, for the first time, I downloaded a free application and I was pleased to find the GPS speedo appears to be responsive and accurate.

The speedo on my '96 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 4X4 five-speed with 3.55 sure grip and 235/75R-15 tires seems to be reading 3 MPH fast at all/any speeds (i.e. vehicle speedo reads 60 MPH while GPS speedo reads only 57 MPH). The response/lag time apparently is only about one second on the GPS speedo.

There is one data reading on the application that changes frequently which is listed as "Satellite: ##/##". It goes as high as 14/14 and as low as 0 when first powered up. It varies frequently such as 12/14, 11/11, 9/10 and so on. I believe it reflects how many satellites are available in my area and which of those are communicating with the application at any one time. Remember, this is Mexico which may have different satellites out there compared to further north. This is all new to me, so don't quote me on that.

I can hardly wait to check out the speedometer on my '72 Satellite Sebring Plus. Its gauges were professionally restored but the speedometer is way off. The original Torqueflite was also rebuilt (by a different shop, of course) and my tires are about the same size as factory tire diameter, so I am lost as to the reason the speedo is not reading accurately. This GPS speedo will certainly be the first step on finding what the problem may be.

In case any of you forgot, here is a youtube video of the Satellite taken after I drove it down here to Mexico before the restoration took place:

If you want to really find the accuracy of your speedo plug an obd reader into the 96 and do the comparison.

      I use Ulysse speedometer app.

      Basic model is free.

      Has HUD mode.

Paid model can track 1/8 and 1/4 mile runs and a whole host of other stuff plus save data.

I compared it to three vehicles and it was within 1 MPH of the newest two.

I am getting ready to wire up a Raceway IQ3 dash, data logger and other electronics in my street/Strip Challenger. The dash uses GPS for the speedo. This will all be cool functions once I get everything dialed in.

I have this unit, from Amazon. It cost about $28, and does a great job. I made a bracket, and attached it to the steering column. It plugs into a cigarette lighter. -- Falcon - GPS Speedometer and Clock.JPG
