My state: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Pa,
The good:

  • Mountains
  • Forests that you can still get lost for days in
  • Recreation
  • Lancaster scrapple
  • BACON
  • Carlisle
Bad:
  • 3 cities that control most of the vote
  • Ever increasing real estate taxes
  • Highest gas tax in the nation
  • Casinos
Ugly:
  • Current Governor bent on destroying natural gas production to save us all from the evils of prosperity
  • 3 different environmental watchdog groups DCNR, DEP, and EPA all duplicating efforts -never mind the local groups.

Damn Wacko, you pretty much nailed it!

I moved up here from Maryland seven years ago. Living in Maryland, I always said, the last place I wanted to move to was Pennsylvania. Sold my last place to downsize. My realtor showed me numerous places in Md, for over a year. He kept insisting on showing me a house in Pa that had belonged to the Realtors aunt. It was the right price, laid out just the way I like a place but it was in town and I'm a country boy. Well I offered a low amount, figuring they wouldn't go for it and here I am.
I'm getting by for now but they're taxing me right out of here. It's insane the way this state robs money from its residents and there's nothing to show for it. Their wallets are getting fatter and the state is going broke. They keep cutting here and there and spending more and more recklessly...

South Dakota:
The Good
The Black Hills , Custer State Park , Mountains , Forests , Streams , Lakes , Tons of public land , Hundreds of miles of open jeep and 4 wheeler trails , Great fishing , tons of elk , deer , antelope , big horn sheep , and other wild life. hundreds of miles of hiking trails. Low property taxes , low license for cars , small government. Although I don't think much of the governor , And 4 beautiful seasons ,The hot rod institute which helps make our area hot rod central.

The Bad
Drug trafficking (thank you Colorado and Sturgis Rally ) Sturgis Rally Lots of large hail storms in summer.

The ugly
Cant really think of anything except the Sturgis Rally.

It sounds & I've been told it's a beautiful state, jobs are there, etc. BUT... what about "winter" ?

The bad & ugly probably oozes from NJ, just like we get the ooze from NY. I like PA, especially western PA.

Lived near Allentown,Pa. for a year and hated the law that let school boards just add to tax base assesment for new buildings, etc. without a vote. WileERobby probably likes western Pa. because it's close to Ohio,LOL.The 'Rustbelt' still has a way to go but I'll take it for the moderate taxes overall. The better-half & I hate the winters, but they are nice at Christmas; love Calif.,Ga., and the Carolina's. It's all a crapshoot in my opinion.Good&Bad wherever you are.Live with it I guess.

Grew up in Southwest PA. My dad lived there his 89 years. His saying "Land of taxes,,Taxation without representation."

Massachusetts:

The Good: Location. Within 2 hour radius or less, one can be at the beaches on cape Cod, mountains, and get into 6 additional states (ME, NH, VT, NY, CT & RI) where you can also sample what those states have to offer, especially the three states north of us. Lots of historic stuff to see around the greater Boston area. Great colleges, hospitals, pro sports teams, pretty good food overall; especially our New England seafood which can't be beat. Due to a diverse economy, MA was not his as hard as other states during the last recession.

The bad: Waaaaay too many people in eastern MA. Lots of traffic congestion within the 495 beltway, rude drivers, slobs who litter, rude people, everyone's in a rush. Taxes are high, especially on businesses, but personal taxes, while high, are not as high as some other states. Housing prices are very high in eastern MA. The leaves are off the trees by late October and don't return until mid-May, which makes for a long season of gray and cold.

The Ugly: The majority of MA residents have ultra liberal ideas, and just love liberal politicians. A Republican party that is pretty much non-existent. Elitist snobbery is rampant in eastern MA, where large amounts of the "enlightened" liberal population think that they are just better than those uneducated rubes in more rural areas (of the state and country).

You could substitute "NJ" for "MA" in much of what you say.

I love the area, have a friend there, & enjoy going through on my way into OHIO... for the Mopar Nats, of course.
