I bought a 66 Belvedere and the master cylinder was not on the car. The previous owner took it off. On the end of the push rod there is what looks like the part of the master cylinder that the push rod fits into. It has the rubber seal still on it.
I am installing a dual drum brake master cylinder on it.
I can not get the part off of the push rod that fits in the master cylinder.
Do I disassemble the new master cylinder or will the old part come off of the push rod. Maybe I am not trying hard enough to get it off of the push rod. The master cylinder that the previous owner removed was a single cylinder drum brake master cylinder.

If you have the correct type master, that rubber and the end of the push rod should snap into the end of the master cylinder piston. The way that manual cylinders operate, that is intended to be sure that the pedal/ linkage and the master follow each other. IE it is evidently possible, without the retainer, to have the pushrod come out of the piston.

the part that is attached to the pushrod is the piston that fits into the master cylinder. This piston is from the old master cylinder. Can I just pry it off. I pulled on it pretty hard and it would not come off. The new master cylinder has a new one in it.

So there must be a retainer on the rod behind the piston from the old master cylinder. I suppose i need to remove it and install the pushrod onto the new master cylinder and then put the retainer snap ring back on.

Ok so i just went to bigblockdart.com and there is a really good post on this exact problem. Now I know that it is a real pain to get the piston seperated from the push rod and that there is a rubber hose on the end of the push rod that fits inside of the piston. I will beat it to death (not) and figure out how to get them seperated.
