I found a '72 Charger on Craigslist the other day, well I went to look at it yesterday.

It's primerd, missing the interior panels(he has them, but he had them re-done in black) missing all the door locks, has no emergency brake, no radio, no carpet, and no weather stripping on the car whatsoever.

Now, the body is really straight, and there's hardly any rust, it's a 318 auto.

The guy tried to tell me that a '72 Charger shell(with no engine/tranny) would sell for $5500(I don't think that's correct, am I wrong?)

He's asking $4500, so I offered $3000, and I was shot down.

So, honestly what is the car really worth in your opinion?

Did it have the 8 3/4 rear ?
I think your offer was very reasonable for a rolling chassis with missing parts here and there-
keep looking and dont settle for any less than what you really want

Also , wonder what work he has done to the body at that point since its priimered- maybe alot of bondo

No, this car was running, ect(it had a 318 and a 904 trans)

I brought a magnet with me for that reason, and it stuck to every place on the car. So no bondo, that I discovered anyway.

I thought $3000 was reasonable too, but after I offered his girlfriend(or wife) tapped him on the leg and said no haha.

He told me that a rolling chassis of a '72 Charger was worth $5500.

I have not been following B bodies until recently. There is one here on CL for $5k but it runs good and looks great in the pics. I don't remember if it is a '72 or '73.

I told myself that I would never buy a primered car; but bought one last spring. I wish I hadn't gotten it. Primer can hide a lot of crappy body work. That's not to say that all cars in primer have lousy work; although some do.

The '74 I recently got is missing the carpet, interior panels, and headliner. I traded an '85 Dodge truck for it; so I have less than $1k total into it so far.

A running/driving solid 72' for $4500 is not out of the question...

A 72' roller for $5500, well...someone would have to REALLY REALLY want the car. There's been a Roller 70' Roadrunner around here for $5K the guy can't seem to get rid of.

Totally understandable. But I was just wondering if my offer of $3000 wasn't lowballing. I mean he looked at me like I was crazy when I offered him $3000 haha. He wanted my '75 Duster plus the $3000 for the Charger, I said no.

He then upped the price of the car, to $5500, after he got off the phone with his friend, who told him that's what he could get for the Charger. Mind you, the add says $4500, obo, or trade for street bike.

Would an offer of $4,000 even be worth it? I'll post some pics I had sent to me in a sec.

First rule of car buying/selling is supply and demand, second is location.
I live in FL and work in AL and I bought a 70 Cuda matching numbers, that needs new quarters and floor boards and runs for 6k in AL.

Saw a 70 Barracuda w/318, not running, needing quarters and trunk pan go for $11k in FL.

Search within 3-400 mile radius and that will give you a good indication of how much a car is worth.

I just bought a running 73 340 Rallye and relatively good shape, has rust issue on the roof and I had to replace steering gear box and u-joints, plus replace windshield and front bumper brackets for $5200, but that is in AL, probably could have sold it for 7-7500 in FL.

See what I am getting at, supply and demand and location are usually the 2 best indicators to cost.

As far as CA cars go, here's a '73 asking $4200... it looks like it's in better shape than the one you looked at.

I'd say your offer of 3K is totally reasonable, even in the higher CA market. Good luck in your quest!

Thanks man, and that's what I thought also. I mean, I think the guy was going to take it, but his girlfriend said no.

I'll give him some time to think it over, and I'll give him a call later on in the week.

Now, I can go to $4,000 on this Charger. Based on the pics I posted, do you guys think it's worth that much? Honestly I can't see anyone paying more then $3,500 for it.

If it is what you want, then yes. $6k would be ok, if it is what you want. I would say $4500 max for CA market.

my opinion.. he's full of ****.. you just wait until he hasnt sold it for a couple of weeks. a 72 charger 318 car for $4500 in that condition.. keep dreaming buddy.. there is a guy who has a rolling shell 71 R/T (real R/T) on moparts for $5000 and he aint getting that price.. and it has the hood and everything (minus drivetrain).

i sold my 72 charger, all painted, with rebuilt 400/727 3 years ago for $4500 and it was complete and A BIG BLOCK CAR TO BOOT! Mine 100% complete, his.. not so much.

That's what I was trying to tell this guy, but he wouldn't listen to me.

Did I tell you guys that he wanted my '75 Duster, on top of $3000 for this Charger?? LOL.

I'll let him sit on the 3k offer, I'm sure he'll be in contact with me soon.

My 2 cents here. Walk away and look elsewhere. He has watched too many Barrett Jackson shows and is trying to get his total investment out of the car. He "never" will. Your $3000 offer was spot on for what he has in today's market. As stated prior, the same car in a different location will carry a different price, but based on what I see in the pics, you can get a lot more car and a better buy for $5500. Don't jump at the first car you see. You will hate yourself every time you open your wallet.

I just sold two 1973 Chargers for about $1000 each. Complete. Both with 400 engines and A/C, 727 Auto, one had rallye dash and 8 3/4.

If I were you I would punt on this guy, and keep looking around. For 3k you could find a better third-gen Charger, like one with a 400, 440, powerbulge hood, slapstick or pistolgrip, etc.

Good luck.

True, I mean he's going by the opinion of his mechanic friend(the seller admitted to me, that he doesn't really know that much about cars/what they're worth) the mechanic friend of his, told him that this perticular Charger(in it's present state) would be worth $5,500 as a rolling chassis LOL

I tried telling him that it's not, but I don't think he'll listen to me, which sucks because I really liked the car.

I told him, he might get $5,500 for it, if it was all painted up, and complete, but not in it's present state.
