I'm thinking yours is a mid year build. I'm not sure, but I believe the first '68's came out late '67 and stopped in June/July, maybe as late as August.
The block, transmission, radiator support and left trunk rail numbers are all stamped, not tags. The left trunk rail stamping is under the rubber weatherstripping. Mine is a June 6 car and the numbers are a part of the sequence number on the build sheet, not the VIN.. Do you have that? It should be under the back seat.
Check the number on the radiator top support rail & the rear of the engine block (just below the oil pressure sending unit) you'll need a mirror and a good light to see it, and then on the left side of the transmission, you'll see a flat area with numbers on it. Clean it off good and snap a pic. All those numbers should match.
Check it out and let me know what you find. If you need anything else, drop me a line.
Good luck!
