Reading your overheating problems I would be concerned about the passages to the heads.
You should probably pull them off.
Bet the best thing would be to remove the engine and disassemble the whole thing.
Well I actually replaced the heads already. At the indianapolis swap meet, someone was selling brand new 318 heads from the 80s for like $120. I figured that was as cheap as getting the old heads machined and I know they arent clogged with crap

I do want to do a whole rebuild eventually. But i still have 43 psi of oil while cruising and 22 at idle, so I'll keep driving until it starts making noise
