I graduated from the CHP Academy March 3, 1983. Our office in South Los Angeles at the time had Dodge Diplomat Patrol vehicles (318 "powered") as well as a single manual transmission 5.0 Ford Mustang.

California law makes it unlawful to enforce traffic laws in an unmarked vehicle. However, this new black CHP vehicle without overhead light bar seems to be pushing the limit.

My area of FL has been getting black vehicles with dark gray writing and graphics on them.

Pretty sneaky, sis.
 
We've always had unmarked cars around here. I remember as a kid being stopped by a cop driving a yellow AMC Hornet.
 
When i was a United States Border Patrol Agent in El Paso, Texas, circa 1985 we put Mexican license plates, tinted windows, and a coat hanger antenna on one of the government Ford LTD vehicles. We fooled some of the illegal alien smugglers with that vehicle when we hung out the red light for a traffic stop!

I've always wondered how one is supposed to know if an unmarked vehicle with flashing lights is legit law enforcement or an imposter? I've had one or two occasions where I was on an empty rural road doing a cross-country road trip and unmarked brown vehicles followed me for miles then turned on the flashing red and blue lights. I drove for another 3 miles to the next exit and pulled into a fuel station. An officer exited the vehicle and was furious I didn't pull over on the highway. I explained that I pulled over in a well-lit public area for both my safety and his. I'm not taking unnecessary chances of an imposter mugging me or stealing my car, let alone a drunk driver crashing into both of us while standing on the side of the road. Dumbass.
 
Our local town is able to patrol a mile or so of interstate next to my house, and they show no mercy. Over the last year they've switched to black Durangos with black decals... the only difference are the decals are a matte finish. It's pretty ridiculous, but anyone in the area knows not to speed through there. Poor out-of-state travelers get smacked consistently.

One of the PD 'round here has the matte black lettering on black trucks and SUV's. They have these with lighter lettering too.

"Unmarked" and "stealth" are different.
 
In 1970-1973 there was town Constable that used his Superbird for a patrol car. Red light on top and all. Trouble was he couldn't drive good enough for all us Trouble makers to lose him.
 
The New Mexico Highway Patrol used a 70 Superbird for awhile back in the day. It was nick named Blackbird. 1st time I saw it was back in the early 80's in a storage yard off of I-25. Saw it again about 20 years ago at a body shop. Not sure what happened to it after that, body shop went out of business about 6 months later.

The town I live in has unmarked minivans, pickups and everything else. Never know when the Po Po is nearby.
