hey guys, does anyone know anywhere in Upstate NY that will inspect a car that isnt expectable for some cash money to get my sister-in-law on the road and out of my house?

She owns a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo that everything works on but she has a CEL with codes P1391 (G Sensor Perfomance) and P1393 (G Sensor High Voltage).

She has been unemployed for the last 6 months and living in my house, using my car, but she just got hired and starts on the 2nd of Feb and I am trying to get her truck back on the road, so far she has gotten insurance, and registration and plates, and I have fixed everything wrong with it except for this damn check engine light.

So does anyone know where I can go and through someone $30 or so and get a sticker slapped on this thing or know what the hell the G sensor is and how to fix it or diagnose it?

did I mention that if anyone can just slap an inspection sticker on it, shed be willing to pay double/triple the normal inspection cost in cash with no receipt......

You realize you're asking someone to step up and either volunteer to break the law, or tell you where to go to have the law broken. Something like that could well cost someone their job, and possibly the shops ability to do inspections altogether.

That being said, I understand your situation and I hope you find someone who can help.

I ain't touchin' that with a ten foot pole! nys inspection stickers are numbered sequentially, and each vehicle is connected to the dmv's computer as the vehicle's system is scanned and the sicker number is downloaded. a red flag is thrown when there is a break in the sequence, and the operator of the inspection station better be able to answer WHY. i've seen people try to pull this before, and have suffered VERY SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES. the inspector goes down, the station operator goes down, and the owner of the vehicle goes down. believe me, it is much cheaper just to FIX THE CAR! :)

btw these two codes are usually related to crank/cam position sensor. check the connectors to start, and make sure nothing chewed through those leads.
what engine is in the rodeo? if it has a distributor, the cam sensor is inside the cap, under the rotor in the form of an igniter or hall effect switch. usually if this is the problem, the car won't run at all. if it has coil packs (distributorless ignition), the car CAN run, probably poorly, without cam sensor reference. this type of sensor reads off of one of the timing gears on one of the camshafts. if the crank sensor is on it's way out, you might get an intermittent no-start. if the crank sensor is junk, it won't run at all.
isuzu's of this vintage are typically powered by GM 2.5's, 2.8's, and 3.1's, and aren't too hard to diag. if it is a 3.2, it is an isuzu motor-and may have to go to the dealer:( hope this helps...

It is a 3.2L V6 it is runs and drives great....those two codes have something to do with the "Rough Road Sensor" or (G)ravity Sensor, some internet sites state something to do with the ABS system perhaps...Im clueless, never heard of this sensor before.

It runs excellent so I dont think its one of the two sensors you mentioned.

Have you checked with the dealership? Is there even an Isuzu dealership left?

There are a few dealers left, they sell a few cars here and there, but mostly exist for the parts and service. There was a recall on Rodeos(and Amigos too if memory serves), for an ABS control module, might be worth looking into if the recall applies and was never performed. A few always seem to slip through the cracks.

Thanks, Ill look into that. Was Isuzu discontinued or something?

Isuzu Motor Corp. will reportedly be ceasing all new vehicle sales in North America by 1/31/09. However, many facilities will remain Isuzu "dealers" for parts sales, service work, and to handle any remaining "open" warranty/recall issues. I think that the Dorschel Auto group has an Isuzu store in or around Rochester. It may be worth a call to them while they're still in business. Give them your VIN and mileage and they can tell you of any open recalls.

Heres what I learned about that check engine light on my wifes Ford Taruas.

If it is on, the inspector must test the cars tail pipe emissions and even though the light is on, it is still possible that it will pass.

I know, I know, you need a good fella.

Her tailpipe isnt hooked up to the rest of the exhaust....Her muffler was shot so I put on a new muffler and a turndown right after instead of hooking it back up to the regular exhaust, but I left it all in place. Exhaust still flows through the cat, muffler and such just doesnt continue all the way down the car....so if he shoved something into the tailpipe to read emisions it would likely error out on him or something...LOL

that is only true in the NY metro area, and even there it is suposed to fail if the light is in.
