My old 318 poly (1964) has a PCV valve on the passenger's valve cover. But it's not the cheap plastic and metal can type found today, but rather a solid all metal valve built (solidly) into the cap for that valve cover. Also, unlike newer 'throw-away' PCV valves, it can be taken apart and cleaned.

It is likely the original valve, and is packed with carbon and sludge. I took it apart and tried to clean it, but the spring inside has broken in pieces. I called around the local parts houses, but nobody understands what I'm talking about. Does anyone know of any parts chains that have them, or where I can get one?

Or, preferedly, can I modify the cap to accept a more moden valve? Thanks!

those pcv valves have the brass square top and are not reproduced.
check on ebay, they are a little pricey.

Well, what about this: I am thinking of cutting the top of the cap out and fitting a grommet that will allow me to use a more modern valve, or, finding a filler cap that will fit, sealing the bottom and cutting a hole in the top for a pcv grommet?

Opinions?

I would try, that same principle so it should work ok experiment with it good luck

Those 50 year old PVC valves are bullet-proof, as long as cleaned off and on. My 64 PVC valve just took cleaning.

Don't recall if the valve itself can be gotten to, and the spring. But, if so, the spring should be fairly easy to match up.

Wait a minute. Forget the spring bit. There is NO spring.

The valve should be free floating, and simply works off of vacuum. Just needs to be cleaned!
