Opinions on Tinting Windows

So the windows of my 70 Road Runner are all out since the car is getting restored. My windshield has the factory tint (it is a replacement - the original had none).

My side and back windows had no tint. What do you guys think about tinting the side and back windows while they are out? With a light car (Limelight) I think a tinted window would look good, but I need the car to be drivable and truly usable at night too.

So what are your opinions? No Tint? Light/Medium Tint? Dark Tint?

Not a fan of the stuff really. Maybe in Florida or Arizona it necessary. I dont think it looks good, especially on older cars with shiny trim around the glass imho

I like it, cuts down on heat, protects the interior and I think it looks good as long as you don't go to dark. I'll be getting mine done eventually.

I am not really a fan of the tinting on muscle cars. For some reason it just dont look right to me on muscle cars. Maybe because they did not have much tinting back then ? Ron

This is a question I have pondered for years. I like tinting but on a classic Muscle Car? Especially the pinnacle year of the Roadrunner? I suppose it comes down to personal taste and the overall look you're going for.

Old school meats in back skinnies up front, I would say no.

Low slung pro-touring stance, possibly.

You're right that it looks better on lighter paint colors. My Bird will be white/platinum pearl with the pro-touring stance when complete. I'm leaning hard toward a medium tint max, but still unsure. Lots of work to do and other decisions to make before I get to that decision.

You don't need to tint the windows when they are out. You can wait until the car is complete. Personally I like tinting because it cuts down on heat and damage to the interior. Even the lightest tinting will help, bad part is it will also make backing up at night more difficult.

Remember, you can always remove it if you don't like it.

If I lived in Arizona, So Cal, or Florida I'd probably go for a light tint, but up here, nah. I don't like the looks of the real dark tint on any car but especially older muscle.

In Iowa, some windows can't be tinted and the law dictates how much tint is permissable..........................MO

I love tint here in FL. I especially like it on lighter-colored cars. As for how much tint I would say just go with whatever is the legal max in your state.

I was just thinking of putting that question out there. The car I just purchased is black, and thinking it might look more sinister w/ tint. but I understand keeping with the theme of old school also.

I would never do it on a muscle car.

And in Finland the law states that you cannot tint the FRONT windows, i.e. driver and front passenger windows. So it would look odd only to have the rear windshield and the rear seat windows tinted.

Wellll.......my 67 Coronet came from NC when it was new and the buyer opted for full factory tinted glass. So i've got this greenish tint all around. Makes it hard to pick an exterior color. I live in Vermont and don't really need tint, except to be safe from snow blindness 10 months out of the year. lol.

I like it and did my 66 Belvedere. In Texas, you can only go with a certain percentage on the side windows, no tinting on the front but a shaded windshield like the factory did (you can dark tint down 6" iirc), and you can totally blacken out the back window. I used limo tint on the back window of my regular cab Dakota and now I'm no longer a red neck in the summer time but it does make it harder to see out it at night but it would be better if it were a slider. At least I could open it on dark nights. Out in the country, I can't see anything unless someone is behind me with lights on.

I prefer to see classic cars like yours unmolested. I would go with tint but not beyond what you could get from the factory very much as you you did with the windshield.

I had tinted windows done to my 94 Dakota and our Daytona...really cuts down on the heat inside the car

I like tint on daily drivers to cut down on the sun's heat and interior damage. Usually don't care for in on muscle cars, but I have seen some that look good with it. I'll leave my 65 un-tinted mainly because I need the money for other stuff for the car.

So thanks for all the great comments so far. Yes, I know it is my car and I WILL do what I want, but I appreciate the thoughts from folks on the board too!

My general thought before I started the poll was to tint them all a lighter but consistent tint that would allow the front and rear side windows to be the same. I agree with Tek that it looks goofy if they are different.

But some of your replies got me thinking - Does that low level of tint really do much anyway? Also, if there is little advantage to tinting the windows now while they are out, then I guess I can wait and see. I can always add tint later if I want it...

I find it interesting that so far this poll is an even split. 50% no tint, 50% some level of tint.
About what I expected.
