Does anyone know if painting a Fel-Pro embossed metal valley pan gasket (on a 383) can be done without a primer before painting with the same engine enamel (Mopar P4120752AB turquoise) used on the original manifold?

Useing primer or etching would be better. Clean real good with lacquer thinner. I tape off where the head/manifold contacts also.

Seen it done many times with good results. Lacquer thinner or Brake Kleen with a little scuff from a Scotchbrite pad. And like khryslerkid said, tape the gasket contact area. Obviously don't paint the underside.

Been almost 2yrs now, still looking good to me ! No primer used, a quick scuff with some 320 grit, wipe down with surface prep/ cleaner and a good coat of Bill Hirsch engine paint ... no different than doing any other smooth surface, valve covers, oil pan, timing cover .....
