PBS- Vietnam by Ken Burns

One Sunday we had the radio tuned to aircrew channel and heard a chopper over DaNang (1971) taking fire thru the floor & having to ask for permission to fire back(?). That's when I fully realized we weren't fighting the way we should have!
Infuriating...we have the mightiest military in the world...with plenty of capable B52s and aircrews and infantry and we ask for permission to fire back? F... that.

Chris Noel? I have a picture of her and I standing together at FSB "Sicily 6".

I also have a picture of Gypsy Rose Lee sitting on the edge of my hospital bed at Camp Zama Army Hospital leaning over with her arm around me. Now how many guys can say they have a picture of themselves in bed with Gypsy Rose Lee. (Younger guys may have to Google Gypsy Rose Lee).

As Gen. Curtis Lemay (commander of S.A.C.) said.."you kill enough of them and they'll stop fighting". That would have been a perfect time to try that out.

He also said this!

My son and I attended a lecture by Mr. Burns at the United States Air force Academy. He had a question and answer period for an hour after he talked about his WWII series. He is probably the smartest human I've ever listened to.

I am sitting here tonight remembering what ones that were there had told me and listening to what was going on in Washington at the time. Sounds quite familiar. The butt heads in Washington lost this for us and that is what hurts the most. Its real surprising we did not loose more than we did.

58000 lost in combat and how many more over the years from the complications of being there. The denials of what the government knew was going on and no help for those whom made it home. Does not make a pretty picture of our government.

anyone pick up a copy of operation ranch hand and read it :(

The more I watch this series, the more I realize what a mistake it was to be there in the first place and what a waste it was to stay so long, but then, hindsight is always 20/20. It's just a shame that so many good guys had to die for a mistake.

Snake I was on 'Sanctuary' in spring of '71 for a week or so, great ship&crew. Watching those load nets slinging around reminded of one guy on the ship w/2broken legs- smashed against a bulkhead by an errant net loaded with ordnance on another ship.

10 minutes in, don't know if I will continue to watch. I am ignorant of the French-Rule history. The narrator sounds a lot like Henry Fonda! Sorry if you heard this before, but my late co worker Jerry Ausano flew rescue choppers there. Never knew. Never spoke of it. A good man. Still don't know why this is so emotional for me.
Narrator is Peter Coyote

I think he narrates all of the Burns documentaries if I'm not mistaken.

Khe Sanh coming soon. Had the honor of listening to a then Lt.Col that was there at the time years later at pro football hall of fame on Veterans Day.
