pinion depth tool

I'm trying to rebuild all of the components on my 67 GTX (engine,4 speed, carb, and much more) I was a mechanic for years (in the eighties) and had access to all the tools but not anymore. You can find most tools fairly cheap aftermarket, but the problem I'm running into is the price of some of the more specialized tools you need such as pinion depth tool. I have a 3:54 DANA and I know I can do the depth by trial and error, and I'll probably will never do again. Has anyone had luck with a reasonably priced after-market tool or know of a good used one for a fair buck?

While I do have a depth tool now, I had successes by using the bearing cap surface of the housing with a depth micrometer and pieces of cold rolled stock. You must account for the split of the cap and housing bore as it's not always on centerline but, I was able to get quite close with my setups. Just a thought.

I used to and have done it this way also. I have the T&D pinion depth tool kit now.
