I don't want my wiper blades to fly off on the freeway and scratch up my brand new windshield ( '72 SSP project car). It seems we have a couple of options when replacing wiper blades, just the rubber refill part or the rubber refill part already placed in the bracket that snaps onto the stainless/anodized wiper arm.
Problem with the smaller rubber refills:
Found a pair at a NAPA store, but I found two problems. #! They would not fit in the first place because they were the right length but not wide enough to fill the slot. The salesperson said these actually come in three different widths. #2 The refills that are presently on the wiper arms have a good solid metal rails running the full length of the refill, those in the store only have one little metal clip at the very end.
Problems with the larger package that includes the refills already attached to the arms:
Those presently on the car have a metal spring that binds the arm onto the post of the wiper arm post. Those for sale in the auto parts chain stores have some kind of black plastic tab that is supposed to snap into the wiper arm post and hold it on there. You have got to be kidding. I tried to install a pair of these. The passenger side seemed to snap in OK and might or might not stay there in a high wind. The driver's side was a bitch to snap in, and after it supposedly was in place, just rotating the blade on its axis and it wants to slip off again. I can't tighten a plastic snap, so i drive around without either wiper blade, not wanting to risk the darn thing flying off and damaging the glass.
I am willing to pay good money for a wiper blade arm designed according to factory specs with a real metal spring to hold it on. I am also willing to pay good money for just the rubber refills of the proper width and hopefully with the full metal rail backing, but I am probably dreaming.
Well, what are you other guys doing? Part number, brand name, and source suggestions? Problems? Solutions? Sharing my "despair"? Thank you.
