Thanks ws23jrt, I'd seen the section gangs working with thermite welding when I was at CN, but never watched the whole process from start to finish.

I have worked with -electric- rail welding. (like spot welding) to do the same task. It takes a large engine driven power source and is much faster.
Replacing bridge crane rails in a producing factory tends to push that old school method into the past.
 
This is interesting. Notice that the bike does not bounce. (at least at slow speeds:)) The wheels roll like round ones.
BTW the shape is called --Reuleax triangle.

 
Interesting indeed. But I admit that I don't see the reason for it, aside from getting noticed at Burning Man.

I have always been interested in mechanical stuff and the -Physics, geometry, and mathematics describe them.
When I see simple things like this it just makes me smile. Here are a couple other examples of that same geometry.
