Probably not that unusual. I wouldn't say those locomotives are abandoned...more like stored. Union Pacific has about 8,500 of them, it's likely that during periods of lower traffic (like between grain hauling seasons) there will be no need for all of them, so they get parked. A desert is a better place for storage than wet climates.

We’ve seen tons of these 50s vids, but this covers a lot of ground. 11 minutes. Check the first few seconds where the late 50’s Mopar pulls into the gas station. The movement...about 25 seconds in. Magic.
