Is their anybody that still straightens and chromes bumpers or would I be better buying one from jegs or AMD
Are the after market bumpers any good?

I’d say there are…..but oh lord it’s expensive

I picked up a pair of BRAND NEW AMD/Goodmark (pretty sure they both come from the same manufacturer) in Carlisle a few years ago for $350 for the pair. Ok, they're not something you'd use on a 100 point resto BUT they are very likely as good as what came on the cars when they were new. Let's face it, when the factory was cranking out a million bumpers they weren't without flaws and they weren't "show chrome" !! You'd have to be on your hands and knees within 2 feet to see the flaws in these.

Tri City Plating or Bumper Boys usually have a display at the major car shows. Their rechromed bumpers aren't bad. (Tri City is the best).
Everybody turns in the nastiest bumpers for cores so the chromers don't have much to work with to start.

Examine the back of the bumper if you buy or swap your bumper with the replaters. Many will look like they were straightened with an axe !! A local guy had one that had so much fill in it I don't think it would have fit the brackets properly! In the good ol' days they straightened bumpers with dies. Nowadays they appear to do it with a plannishing hammer with a "one size fits all" axe head on it.

it ain't cheap

AMD makes decent reproductions

I've straightened a few over the years by doing basic body work to them....only with much bigger hammers. Thing is, I was just painting mine but they were straight afterwards. The chrome shops are drying up in my parts....

It would be interesting to se what damage you're dealing with. I've straightened a lot of things with patience and a tabletop press I built. I've done chromoly kart axles to within .002 runout, motorcycle handlebars and a host of other things. With the right backing and patience a lot of things are possible. But when it comes to a production shop, its usually "get the thing straight and fill the dents".

Nothing like doing 'major' body work on heavy metal! lol. Only thing is now that I'm older, doing sheet metal work isn't exactly easy anymore.....

Don’t waste your time and money with Bumper Boys. I bought one from them and the chrome pealed off in sheets about 6 months after installing. I have a set of AMD bumpers and am very satisfied with the fit and finish.

Agreed!

I just picked up a gorgeous re-chromed front bumper at Carlisle from Tri City Plating. It's for my '75 Scamp 383 project. This thing looks fantastic (and I'm really picky).

Just understand that Tri-city only have ONE level of quality ... TOP NOTCH. There is no "economy" or "daily driver" quality from them, they have a reputation to uphold. Along with that comes price. AMD is NOWHERE NEAR the quality of Tri-City. AMD is a reproduction of '60's and '70's factory finish and they do a good job of it. You are not comparing apples to apples when you compare Tri-City to AMD. And I would take AMD over Bumper Boyz any day of the week!

I think I am leaning toward AMD. I bought rear quarter from them and the fit was good. The first one was bent up but that was shippers problem. AMD made it right.
