Relocating 68 GTX Fuel Cap

Hi. I have a 1968 GTX with the original fuel cap/filler neck behind the license plate. I'm looking to install a quarter panel mounted flip fuel cap assembly (similar to the 69 Charger fuel cap) in place of the original. Does anyone make an aftermarket 68 GTX fuel tank with a drivers side filler tube or am I stuck with having to use a trunk located fuel cell?

I don’t see why the Charger fuel tank won’t work. I plan on doing the same thing to a ‘68 Coronet. I plan on using the Charger tank, trunk floor, filler tube and I’ll graft in the molded depression from a scrap quarter panel for the flip top gas cap. Plymouth wheel base is 1 inch shorter than Dodge but shouldn’t be a problem.

As you compared it to the Charger, I would suggest seeing if the Charger tank and fittings would work for you since they're both b-bodies.

I know you didn’t ask me, but I’m doing it to mine because my Coronet had a collision repair done early in its life where they grafted a huge section of a doner car to mine. My Coronet is a base model too so nobody would be willing to spend the $$$ to do a proper resto. The car needs a left quarter and a trunk floor. That gives me a green light to whatever I want, and I happen to have all the old parts from a ‘70 Charger except the floor pan. Gassing up behind the license plate is a pain in the *** compared to the Charger setup, and it looks cooler.

It's just personal preference I guess. I love the look and convenience of the quick fuel flip caps.

Well that’s true - nothing convenient about the behind the license plate gig - but you have to admit it’s pretty funny when you let someone else gas her up and they are at a loss trying to find where to put it.

There is a lot more than just bolting parts. Better measure a charger to your GTX. The charger has a different angle and is very wide. The quarter is not just a hole. It is raised and molded to fit the ring. So there is a lot of fabrication just on the quarter. Plus the parts. Tank, sender, filler tube, flip cap and bezel, vent tube, plus misc. Then the tank may not fit the trunk bottom without doing some fabrication of the mount bosses that position the tank. Then you may still need straps, bolts, top tank insulator pad. To me it will be a big project with a hefty cost. To me it is a waste of time and money.

At one time I had planned to do that to my '69 RR. Then I saw one that someone else had done and thought it looked like crap.

I wouldn't with my '69 GTX. But saying that? Fuel behind the license plate is a bonehead design? Yes, you gain some trunk space. And keep the body lines cleaner. But it causes leaking/venting issues over time? As well as a more dangerous placement for fire.

I have a '64 Polara that also has fill behind the licence plate. It does not matter what side of the gas pump you pull up to. A real plus at busy gas stations.

From what I read somewhere is that the regular B body fuel tank and the Charger fuel tank started out as the exact same tank they just punched the holes in the different spots depending on application.

You are discussing 2nd gen B's. I have a 3rd gen and wish my filler was on the drivers side. The filler neck is almost a straight run into the tank; even with my cars *** up somewhat from stock. I have to be real careful when filling as if there is any velocity at all from the pump, it pukes all over the place. You can go full on the trigger for a spell but back off shortly thereafter. The only way to avoid it is to keep your ear near the rear and slow down to a crawl when getting close to full. If there is any noise nearby from traffic I can't hear the flow which causes the problem. On top of that, the new spring loaded filler has a wider flange on it which is very difficult to get in to the neck as it hits part of the bumper, need to use 2 hands. It sux!

The charger trunk pan and tank will be a drop in to any 68-70 b body. I actually put a 68-70 charger trunk pan into a 67 Belvedere to do a mini tub and allow the exhaust to go out the back of the car.

The underpinnings of the 66-70 are in essence the same with minor differences. The dodges made the wheelbase 1” longer by using a longer front spring hanger and moving the rear shackle hole back one inch.

Well, yes and no. You're never stuck while you have the imagination and skills to bring your ideas to reality. I went the fuel cell route and placed two motorcycle style pop up filler cap/necks on the quarter tops next to the front corners of the trunk lid on my 67 Coronet. They are from Rullo Caps and have an aluminum body with a weld to neck to attach to the quarter skin. I routed the filler tubes down and through the body of my trunk lid gas lift braces. Easy peasy. Look tough too. Now, to answer your question, yes, it's likely that you can modify the stock tank to have the filler neck routed up through the floor in the area behind the wheel well hump inside the trunk and curve forwards and up to meet a filler neck on the trunk deck. I would investigate the use of all, or parts, of a 68/69/70 Charger tank and filler neck assembly. Good luck!
