Remember the big Y2K scare?

That is the same sort of stuff I do on a daily basis. Being annoying is my own mission in life.
The key in being annoying is to know where the edge of the cliff is....and knowing where you like to vacation! :D

One of the sad points about Y2K were all the people that started prepping for it and the ones I'm talking about is the ones that sold they're homes and moved out into the deep country than built bunkers etc and stocked them with all kinds of supplies and some spent they're life savings getting ready for this crazy stuff and many ended up with broken families and manny of them neber recovered and than were never ever seamed again.

I think those are the same suckers are buying into the climate change Armageddon.

At ORD? Dear Lord that must have been a clusterf***
People were going nuts all over the place! People would ask me what I was going to do for Y2K and they thought I was nuts for laughing and saying "same thing I do every day" lol

We used to be at ORD, but where moved to the headquarters building in Elk Grove (a couple of miles from ORD) in '81 and then they moved to the Willis Tower (downtown Chicago) in '11, a year after I retired. That said, we dispatched and controlled all UA flights worldwide from those locations, not to be confused with air traffic control. That is done by the FAA.

Being a city worker at that time there were a few nights of overtime as preparation were made for power failure, loss of water, mayhem in the streets. Good money for the pocket book. A hunter friend showed me how to field dress some squirrels. That was my only prep. They honestly tasted like chicken. Skip ahead time to this Christmas and our 8 year old grandnephew (who shot his 1st deer at 5) gave us a dressed squirrel for a present. Look up the receipt for “redneck hillbilly chicken” which is delicious white gravy over rice and add a side of homegrown green beans. Now we are ready for the roaring 20’s.

BTW my Mexican cat is doing very well here. We have four other rescue cats and she fits right in with no problems. Doesn’t seem to notice the cold, but of course we haven’t let her outside yet. She is one tough, street wise cat. She is by far the smallest cat we have, and our largest is at least three times her size and a bully. This cat doesn’t care, which has the bully very puzzled, indeed. When it’s supper time this cat will just push the bully out of the way. Not in a fighting or aggressive way, just in a “get out of the way” kind of way.

Yep I know of that as well. I am also a FFA licensed Flight Dispatcher and I also have 10000 flight hours as a crew member retired from the USAF. I tried like HELL to get onboard with UAL or UNTIED AIRLINES as I like to call them but they wanted "experience" of which my qualifications were never considered. I enjoyed getting that license along with an ATP endorsement and further advanced my career in flight operations until I retired in 2007. I never did get a position to use that training and dispatch for a carrier but it wasn't meant to be so I moved on. Besides, after working all kinds of shifts and odd hours, they wanted to put me on Grave Yards and I threw up the "BALK" sign and said no way. Only days or mids. It all worked out in the end and now I can talk Pilot talk and read and understand all the charts, approach plates, SID's Star's, NOTAM'S, PIRIP's, and most of all Weather. Y2K was a joke and nothing really came from it other than a new Millennium and further chaos throughout the WORLD ...cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

Hyped bullshit. Like the Weather Channel during hurricane season. Hyped bullshit. Nothing happened. The drama got to be a problem at work.

I was in the guard in NY at the time went through a ton of training just for it, red cross shelter manager I was groomed for, . Man that was a hurry up and wait scenario, took me away from my family AGAIN! Saw them again on the 3rd. Actually had to zip tie a member that got divorce papers that day and take his side arm away. That's about all that happened.

I had recently been promoted form "computer guy" to "server and switch guy" and got to lead a team of computer guys to actually run a test battery on every single workstation in my geographical area of support.

I begged the big boss, and begged him again after testing about a dozen of every model we had (thinking logic was my friend), but still had to complete all roughly 10,000 machines.

Of course not a damn thing happened.

...and a LOT of "real work" didn't get done during that time.

I was surprised at the number of those bunkers that a few years later could not be located and were never used.

THe USA is the most paranoid country in the world. Think of all the $$ that was spent on the entirety of Y2K. Enough to fund the EU for a couple of years. What a fiasco that was. Went to bed and woke up with only a hangover. I work for insurance companies and we feared all of our data would be lost in a data driven business. Many, many millions spent on prep all for nought.

Hard to believe that was 20 years ago!

I remember they wouldn't let us go home. Long arms, riot gear,,lol. Standing around like idiots with our thumbs up our asses. Finally, someone from upstairs, told us to pack it in. Got home before midnight and spent time with the wife and the babies. Least that was cool. Media induced BS/panic.

I was part of the "alert" flight crew. Spent 5 days living in the hangar waiting for Y2K. My family was home with the new generator that I had purchased a couple of months previous. We had/have a history of power outages and a generator was necessary to keep cellar from flooding. I got a good price on it since it was before everyone started losing their minds about Y2K.

I still have things at work with Y2K compliant stickers on them.
Tape dispensers, hammers, chairs, desks, etc.
We would get equipment back from the field that didn't have any computing capability with the silly little stickers plastered on them. I would remove them and place them on stuff.
I even put one on an anvil.
A couple people fell for it.
