Spouse just got us a "Sam's Club" membership and suggested I purchase a new recliner. I got 10 feet away from one and turned away. I don't know why specifically I got this impression, but it looked to me like it was ready to fall apart already.

Went home and found the tag on the old recliner (see photo). Something tells me I'm better off recovering this old faithful rather then purchasing new.

Reupholster it and it will be better than the one at Sams ( the import giant step brother of China mart) . Use good material and it will last.. I miss the good days of Sears... it was the place to go when I was a kid. That tag made me think...

It will probably cost as much or more to recover it, but you will know what you have. The tag has no date, but just showing Sears Roebuck & Company means it will stand the test of time and IMO would be well worth it. There are people and probably on this forum that don't even know Sears Roebuck & Company. It was last know as just Sears, before they went belly up.

if all the mechanism is still good & proper working order
you could reupholster it,
maybe have them bolster up the foam a bit too

probably cost as much as buying a new one, now thou

but if you like the chair/recliner, it may be worth it

especially if you do a quality material,
or a quality shop does the work

down in Mexico they use to do great upholstery work
for 1/2 or even less like a 1/3rd than,
what we could get here in the states
it was all the rage for a while, to go south
to get automotive upholstery done anyway

go for it

Jjust because its at Sams or Wally's doesn't mean its from China. They get their stuff from the same places most everyone else does.

If you buy new get a La-Z-Boy. Made here from stuff made here.

Upholstery is going to cost more than a new one for sure. Try to find an old timer to do it properly or you will be disappointed. The quality of the material is also a major factor in the price. There are different grades of upholstery, foam and leather hides. Also I would tear it down and inspect the frame to make sure that it's still worth the investment. I love old furniture for the quality. Leather Chesterfield sofas, and Turkish chairs are at the top of my list. You don't see any horse hair pure goose down fill, kid mohair or 8 way hand tied coil springs any more. Now they use the cheapest crap possible. Just remember that quality is remembered long after price is forgotten.

A newer, well built recliner will be more comfortable. You may think yours is comfy but wait till you compare. I only buy Palliser furniture (Made in Canada) but have purchased the Chinese stuff many many years ago. Chinese stuff lasts about 5 years whereas the better Canadian one I still have after 14 years and it's still in perfect shape and comfort. The technology they have for comfort is nice and it's still made with solid wood, not dust.
I'd suggest going to a store that sells Lazy Boy or another American brand and try them out. Avoid the Chinese if you can.
