This might be something simple. I'm sitting here wondering about it and don't have the car here so I thought I'd ask you guys...

I've had my 72 in the shop recently and we did an engine, trans swap from a 318/904 to a 440/727. The 904 neutral safety switch was a 3 prong. The 727 had a single prong. We pulled the single prong out of the 727 and installed the 3 prong NSS from my old 904.

Now when the car is in drive, the reverse light comes on.

Any ideas?

I searched the forums and didn't see anyone else who has mentioned this issue. I don't think I had this issue before we did the swap. Could it be so simple that all I need to do is spin that connector 180 degrees and reinstall? I left my FSM and diagrams at the shop so I can really get any info.

Could be one of two issues,

1. issue with the plunger on the switch, I had a similar issue with my reverse lights on my 73 because of a cheap switch, however, since you are putting a switch in that did not belong to the 727, the plunger alignment may be off causing it to turn on in drive rather than reverse. Check the wear and height on the plunger of the switch that came out of the 727 with the one that came from the 904.
2. I would make sure that the linkage is correctly aligned with the shifter and make sure its really in drive and not in reverse.

Magnes, as already stated above, also. The single wire switch is a 68 and older if I remember right. Do you have the three wire switch fully seated into the opening?

You need to find a 69 and up 727 shift dent lever for your valve body the 3 program neutral safety switch is the same for all long 69 and up 904's & 727's. A separate number is listed for short transmissions.
