Ok I have had this car for years not being able to do much with it as work kept me way to busy. Anyway have a little time now and there is a little of rust around the back window (not bad) and also some bubble starting in the lower rear quarters. I want to actually drive the car for a few years before I tear it down. Is there anything I can coat this with to keep it from speading other than just cutting it out. Thanks in advance

The oxidation has already started and there's a reason people call rust "cancer". Once it sets in, it will continue to grow. Nothing you can throw over that paint will stop it for any kind of extended amount of time. POR15 and Rust Bullet work pretty well for halting rust, but i'm sure you don't want black or silver rust encapsulator over your body paint. They recommend those be down to the rust or metal to actually work well anyways. Best bet is to remove the rust. If not, keep the car dry and stored in a dry place. At least that will hamper how fast it grows.

Good luck to ya.

I did plan on taking it down to metal but have heard of those rust converters and was wondering if that was going to work. I do have it stored in the garage but want to enjoy it for a few years before the tear down. Thanks again

I've used a product called Pickel X, you can find it online. It works pretty well, but you have to take it down to the metal and then you could put a bit of paint over it. But by itself it won't stop the rust.

I recommend Rust Converter from Eastwood. Easy to use and stops rust. If you top coat it with rust converter, the rust will stop.

I have used both the spray and the gallon form. I also used rust bullet and POR 15. So far, Rust Converter is the best all-around choice IMHO (cost, ease, performance, durability).

What you need to do is completely seal it from both sides. If the oxygen can't get to the metal to oxidize it then you will be OK. You can (should) treat it with a rust converter first then seal it with POR or even brush on good 'ol Rustoleum. Eastwood has this oily waxy stuff that you can spray through a hole in a body panel and that will coat everything behind the rust area then just pretty up the outside.

ok thanks most of my problems I can get to both sides. I want to enjoy the car for a couple of years and then plan a complete tear down but just want to stop what I can now or slow anyway. It has been stored indoors for most of the 12 years I have had it so it has not spead all that much but having it on the road I want to protect it as much as possible. Thanks and all of the help is great.
