hello everyone.
on a 64 polara how do you know if the motor and trans are original.
its a 426 4 speed car.
thanks

No such thing as numbers matching until 68. Best way is to check date codes and compare to scheduled production date on fender tag. As far as I know the engine assembly date should be about a month prior to the SPD but I don't know much about how that was done. Hopefully someone else will chime in on that because I wouldn't mind knowing more.

the tranny has no ##s at all.
just casting ##s
more investigating

'64 Polara with a 426 and 4-speed? Nice car.

I was discussing this topic with someone on the C body forum a while back, and I tend to go with Meep's description of "numbers matching", i.e. before '68 didn't have VIN numbering on the engine/trans. Strictly speaking though, a car with all casting/part numbers and casting dates correct on a pre-68 Mopar would also be considered "numbers matching".

So for your '64 Polara's engine, if it has a casting date on the block (behind the starter I believe?) that is a month or two before the scheduled build date as Meep said, that's about as close as you're going to get for numbers matching. Also look for a machined pad at the front of the engine block and look for stamped numbers. For a '64 426, you should find "V42" (V=1964, 42=426) and then three numbers that indicate the build month and day (according to the all-knowing net).

Good luck with finding what you need.
