I tried the "pump it down" article for the saginaw pump. The shim idea that richard ehrenberg put out. I had bought a new saginaw pump, new borgeson gearbox, cooler, the upgraded linkage, etc. All of that have been working just fine, but still feel like the over powered factory gear box. No slop, just over boosted. Can turn with one pinky finger. I tried the shim idea this weekend, emptied tank, added shim, bleed the system and it really didn't help. Maybe a little?? Either way, now the saginaw makes a whine. The more rpm, the louder the whine. I can't rev engine over 3500 without the pump sounding like its ready to go out. I only added the about .07 "shim. Any advice? Do I need a different model saginaw?

Advice? Yeah. Take the shim out.
You may feel overboosted because of your alignment.
 
When hydraulic pumps whine, often it's from an air leak. Does the fluid look like it's foamy?
 
0.07" shim? That is very thick. When you add shims, you reduce pressure. The opposite of what you would expect. Rarely to these pumps need to be modified. While the pressure is regulated by the above valve, the flow volume is regulated by the size of the hole in the pressure hose exit fitting in the bottom of the pump.
 
Usually when it whines, it's a sign of restriction in the system.
 
I tried changing shims to reduce the pressure without success ended up using the ford pump which I think is around 850 psi rather than 1350 psi
 
The Borgeson box needs the higher pressure. I would take the shim out, and ask where you bought it what you can do. I had some problems, and Peter Bergman helped me sort it out.
 
UPDATE: Ehrenberg messaged me and said the borgeson isn't as effected by shims as the factory unit and that it shouldn't hurt anything to experiment with it. I removed the valve to take the shims out and I remembered I had a another backup pump on the shelf. Exact same part number. I took the valve out of that one, and it actually had a shim already on it. The first one had zero shims. So....I put the valve from the second pump into the first pump and tried it again. The noises went away and the steering was slightly firmer.
 
I've found that the rebuilt pumps that I have bought have NO shims in them, like the rebuilders aimed to have maximum boost pressure.
They also seem to rebuild many Chrysler alternators with the small pulley to spin faster and generate more amperage.
