Six Pack Kick Down Carburetor Linkage

Ok,

Can anyone tell me how to adjust the kick down linkage on a six pack. Specifically I am talking about the slide mechanism on the carburetor. Should this be attached ridged to the carburetor?
Also what function does the aft the spring perform?

I am attaching a picture for clarity.

this is for a 4 barrel carb, but it is the same idea with your setup. Atf spring it to keep pressure on the kickdown lever

check out at 1.41 minutes in the video to see the adjustment

Thanks to both of you for the help. Think I got it wired up. Road test may require some adjustment.
