In my photo album, I have a gob of pics of the 1967 Belvedere I six-passenger station wagon I bought from a guy in Belgium in 1990. It was a 225/3-speed on the column originally. The seller had installed a 1977 225/904, as the original engine had locked up. The car was originally shipped from the US to a converter in Brussels, Belgium with two other identically-equipped '67 Bel I wagons for use as funeral cars, or lijkwagen in Flemish/Dutch, or leichenwagen, in German. Two were sold to a funeral home in Antwerp, and the third was shipped to Sweden for the same purpose. The car originally had a blue vinyl interior with a black exterior, but had whorehouse red velour seats out of a '78 LeBaron when I got the car. The original seats came with, and were in mint condition, so they went back in! The car had all HD bits, with Hemi brakes, Hemi torsion bars, HD rear springs, and a 3.55 8-3/4" SG rear. It came with a 200 km/h speedometer, HD heater, working clock and a radio delete plate.
My German neighbors had come to expect odd American cars to come my way, but they weren't exactly keen on a hearse in the neighborhood. Lucky for me, I had another oddity in German living, and that was having an attached shop I could get four full-sized American vehicles in and still have room to move around and work, so it was out of sight. Unless I were to drive it to work. Which always created a bit of interest when I'd drive it through the entry gate!
When I shipped the car home in 1992, it was on a transporter going to the port of Bremerhaven with two brand new V-12 Mercedes-Benz coupes...these were $145K cars back then! Looked a bit out of place, but they took great care of the car. When I picked the wagon up in Houston, a couple of the dock workers commented on the old Plymouth. I told them it had been a hearse from 1967 to 1989, they kinda freaked out a bit! I gassed up and drove the 525 miles home to OKC. Got about 17 mpg, and it ran flawlessly. I ended up driving that car for about seven years, and traded that on a very nice paint job on a 1967 GMC Suburban I was restoring in 1997. By then, I had swapped in a 1973 360 and 727, which woke that Belvedere up nicely. I still have the build sheet to that car in my archives. It's still in the OKC local area. Last I'd heard, the owner was going to swap in a Gen 3 Hemi and pull his boat with it.
I know where the photos are of this car, and I'll pull a few out to take pics to post.
