Smart car hits squirrel

A friend's son does accident reconstruction and he worked on a case where a 'Dumb' car got caught between a large truck and the guard rail. It got balled up into a much smaller ball than it was originally. The driver made it but not without some major body damage. It's bad enough driving these glorified go carts on the freeway let alone even get near a big truck.

You wouldn’t catch me driving one of those things on the LA freeways. Suicide mission if you ask me.

That wreckage was the result of driving it at 70 mph. into a concrete barrier on a Top Gear episode. Most of the entire passenger cage was intact, and the doors still opened and closed.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety agrees that a heavier car can help with protection in a crash, but that model of Smart Car got the highest ratings for front end collisions.

I don't think they did any testing with squirrels though.

One of my older brothers, yes, the crazy one, drove one of these death traps on a trans Canada trip without a single hitch. Said it got great mileage but he was careful around big trucks....

Those things are nothing but coffins on wheels. I have little sympathy for anyone who gets hurt (or worse) in one of those things. They accept the risk when they get in. NOT ME!
