Just got off the phone with my wife who was visiting some friends of ours. My buddy Chuck told me that he heard on the local radio station the our little town county atty is planning to obtain warrants and go into people's home to see if they are habitable. Any that he finds that doesn't meet his standards, the people living there will be evicted and the house will be torn down. His reasoning is that he would rather look at an empty lot than an undesirable home.

we are becoming the USSA, United Socialist States of America, welcome to blue dog America, we fought 50 years against socialism/communism growth in the world & some select few at home {mostly all Hollyweird}, McCarthy was right & NOW we have "most all" our liberal leadership today, is going down that path here at home, they know what's better for the masses, yeah right !!, vote them out, protest, speak up, it's time to take a stand our great country depends on it...

I don't know what the exact story is where you live, but stuff like this has been going on forever. Just as an example of my own personal experience when I worked for a local utility, I would be sent into houses that would turn your stomach. The filth that some of these people were living in was unbelievable. You couldn't hold your breath long enough to do any work. Sometimes there were families with little kids or babies living in these s#itholes. We would turn these people into the county health department for investigation. Do I feel bad about turning them in. Hell No!

They are probably afraid that the dilapidated residences will become crack or meth houses. Tearing them down sometimes actually helps the value of the ones that are taken care of. Just like an old car that needs to be restored. If you cant do it or get it done yourself then sell it to someone that can at least.

Those houses are on the upside of town. The lawyer we had when we were doing our adoption would take some nose-candy.

I can understand if kids are living in the house, but some of them have people living there barely making a living. They can't afford to live there, but they can't afford to move either. The jobs that are there just don't pay all that well. I have been in some of those houses you described too.

I could see how you wouldn't want someone living like that but on the other hand why should the gov't have a right to take away someone's house??

I agree, If this gos on, whats next! I know your place is up to snuff Roger, you've told me all the improvements you've done on your place and if there were more people like you and Vicky, they wouldn't have to worry if our homes meet there standards, There isint much more when it comes to my home that makes me madder as when the inspectors, and or the township tell you what to do and how to do it! Its a zoned area here now but wasn't 30 + years ago when we bought the land, now to build a room you have to have a permit to do it and follow there rules, Thats why i pay taxes, its my place keep your nose on your own business!! I put in another drive way and i had to buy a culvert pipe from the township, i told him exactly what he told me when he was here before, "You said the township owns from the middle of the road into my yard 20 feet or so" Why am i buying a culvert pipe? Blaw blaw, pay it or we take it! the other driveway he said the pipe i had in, for years mind you was to small in diameter and i had to buy another.. Even paying taxes i think we own nothing!

Damn right Ron! We are just renting from the gov't. Try missing a prop tax payment or two and you're likely to end up thrown out of a house that you may have paid for 100%. It's all BS!!

I live on property and am glad no one lives next to me with a private junk yard.I keep my place up and expect my neighbors to do the same. Poor dont mean dirty. Growing up we didn't have much but kept the place clean.

eminent domain. As someone already mentioned, if it's a public safety or health hazard and the owner does not address the problem, then its a valid option. And they don't "just take it away" - you have to be properly compensated.

It's not me talking out of my ***, its in the Constitution, clear as day.

It's a common occurrence in areas that got hit hard by the housing market crash and there are a lot of foreclosures. Some counties actually fly helicopters to try to spot pools that are neglected and can become a breeding ground for disease (mosquitoes = malaria, anyone?).

The original poster wasn't talking about a dilapidated house like a crack house or SF, Oakland, Detroit, LA or Chicago area drug den... just a home

I'm aware of that. Also that he heard it from a buddy who heard it on the radio. Ever play telephone?

Everything about zoning, permits, approvals, and inspections just pisses me off. I used to live almost a mile outside of the city limits and now only live about a 1/4 mile thanks to a guy developing some land for a high class trailer park but so far am unaffected. I've asked myself several times what I'm going to do if they do start asking for all of that stuff "I don't know". Up until now we've literally built a house, garage, woodshop and many other things and haven't asked anybody anything "it's my property, period" no permits, nothing. I've probably already broken the law, haha but that's just how I see it "it's my property and I'll do as I want".
