Spare Tire w/ Battery in Trunk?

Sorry if this has been tackled before, but I couldn't find it. Does anyone else here with a relocated battery in the trunk have the issue of the spare tire? I want very much so to keep the tire in the trunk, but I really want to be able to secure it. I'm far too inclined to spurts of shennanigans and tomfoolery to be without a spare right now, but I also can't just have the thing flying about loose with the bumper jack in the trunk!

I'd rather not put my battery back in the engine bay, but want to know if there's still a way secure the spare. Thoughts?

On a street car, most put the battery on the right side just behind the wheel house and keep the spare in the stock area. Do you have AAA? I haven't ran a spare in my Dakota for a long time now....

I suppose you're right, I do have roadside assistance that covers that stuff through USAA. The battery was relocated there by the previous owner. I could just roll the dice and see what happens, but was curious to see if there was a relatively moderate fix for the situation.

I would move the battery to where it should be in the truck, behind rr tire, and than put the space where it rightfully belongs.just my 2cents

I think I'll defenitely do that when it comes time to start welding rear quarters as that tray itself is welded down. As for now, I think I'm just going to take it all out.

putting it behinde the rr wheel well is an old racers trick for wieght distribution and to help balance the weight of the driver.you can really put it anywhere in the trunk.

I like to put all the weight I can towards the center of the car as much as possible. It helps let the car pitch rotate quicker on the launch. This is more of a drag car deal but sometimes I get a bit **** with my quicker street cars too

I thought better weight distribution to accomodate driver weight was accomplished by mounting the engine just off center, passenger side? Man I have a lot to learn... lol.

unless you plan on seriously drag racing your car, the placement of your battery in the trunk is totally irrelevant. put it in a spot where you can easily access it to change it and you will be fine. mine is on the driver's side in the trunk behind the wheel well.

The factory offset the engine/trans to make room for the steering box etc. It also gives the driver more room around the pedals etc.

I was a serious street racer at one time and wanted every advantage I could get and did all the little things that helps a car launch and run hard on street tires. It also handled pretty good too I disagree with placing weight just anywhere is irrelevant. The more thought about where weight goes will make a difference in the way the car acts. In this case, it probably isn't going to amount to much but every little bit adds up.

Cranky, I get that you were a serious street racer, and this worked for you, but to imply that what was good for you is good for everyone, especially if it is not an apples to apples comparison, is just misleading. Street racing and cruising are two totally different applications. The effects of a battery located, where you are mentioning, in a cruising application is so negligible that any benefits would never be able to be measured and would be inconsequential when it comes to actual ride characteristics. If we are talking ride characteristics, where his battery is located now would be ideal as it provides even transfer in lateral movement if turning were a big issue.

FWIW, I put mine on the driver's side just so my battery cable could follow along the OE wiring harness in the trunk so that it has OE cable crimp-downs to keep it in place. It is not ideal for drag racing, but it sure does make it simple to secure the battery cable w/o aftermarket holddowns.

Just an idea, but you could resess your battery into the trunk floor and get you some extra room. Depends on how far you want to go. I did this to my 68 Runner but the car was back halfed so it didn't bother me doing it.

My 2c, my daughter placed hers between the wheel as above. on her 73 dart the spare is in a sunken wheel well so the spare location isn't a problem. The problem occurred when someone tried to jump start a car and hooked the cables up back wards because they couldn't see and guessed which one was which. that location makes servicing a pai ,as you have to climb in the trunk to reach it, but it is up out of ther way which is nice.
