Does a strickly street car need a stall converter. What are the downsides without one.

My car is driven only on the street and has a 4500 stall converter. Big motor (about 500 HP).

As you can imagine it is very logy from a start.

What size should I convert to or can it use a standard converter

it really depends on your camshaft. I'm running a 4200 myself and its not that bad but I reciently changed to a cheater cam with sixpack duration specs but 587 lift and can probably go to a 3000 or 3500. I was running a purple shaft with 296 557 specs previously.

Car has cam with .617 lift and I will be changing that to something kinder on the street so I will probably drop the stall to match the cam around 2200 it looks like

I have a 3000 stall on my 500 cid engine and it produces about 650 HP. I think you have way too much stall.

I have 440 460 Hp 3:55 gears 3000 stall comp roller hyd. 545 lift, 2800 would be nice for street

Talk to Dave at Hughes Engines. They build Mopar engines, don't just sell cams. Dave will hook you up with the right cam and recommend the correct stall.

I have a 494/440 six pack with 555 hp. My stall was matched to the motor and is 3000. Agree with 69 Coronet - you certainly don't need a 4500 stall for your purposes.

Thanks for all the responses. I thought the stall was way too high.

Looks like a little rework coming up this fall, cam, gears, converter
