Time to get a convertor for the 68 GTX and would like some real life experience to
point me in the right direction. 440, .509 lift cam, headers, 373 gear, ported 906's,
Indy dual plane, 800cfm AVS2. No drag strip use. mainly want a small stall for some
"cush" to give me some head room when I drop it in gear and a little fun when tooling
around town. Read alot of posts about "Loose" and "Tight" convertors. Would like to keep
it on the tight side if possible. Keeping in mind that the factory stall for a stock 426 Hemi
is 2800 RPM, I think I need to stay relatively close to that number. I have no experience
with stall convertors as I grew up in the seventies, and the technology was worthless
back then. Thanks for the help!

My 2-cents.... all I know is that there's something called a "K-factor" which is really what your stall is. Bigger K = higher rpm stall. Everything else is just a guess based upon a particular application

I recommend giving Kenny Ford a call at PTC in Muscle Shoals, AL. He has been the owner of the business for many years, is hands on, and is a life long Mopar man. My recommendation is a 9 1/2 inch but talk to Kenny.

I was very happy with the factory small block 340 converter I swapped into my A12.
Spend the money for a custom for your application, from a name brand Mopar converter specialist. The single WORST hot rod part I EVER bought, was a cheap, complete pos converter.

Agree about spending the money.

I'll second that, he just did a 9-1/2" for me, and it seems pretty stellar.

Mario has a mystery convertor he wanted to give me. I think it was a 6,000RPM Stall!

I've been using ATI convertors and am happy with them. Both for street applications and also race. No used parts, all new parts in their units. Just sayin. ruffcut

I've heard that alot! Really surprises me. The two companies that keep sounding good are Dynamic and PATC. Anyone have something close to my combo? Hey, money is money!

My combo isn’t far from what you have and is why I think a 9 1/2 would work great.

A tight small converter is superior to a loose larger converter with the same stall speed. It will be more expensive.
Hughes has several very nice informative converter videos on you tube. The stall speed one (I think its #5) is particularly good....

Four speeds work in every application. I kinda wish I went that way……

I'm Lazy and don't want to work that hard to change gears!

If you have your cam card, send it to your builder of choice and talk with them about what you're looking for. They can pick the correct setup to get you down the road. I've used Continental before for custom builds, but don't know if they're still around.
