I have a 1969 dodge coronet R/T and I am having a problem with the steering wheel. If you hold onto the wheel you can move the wheel in and out about a 1/4 inch. play, can someone help to diagnosis this problem? Thanks.
First, you need to find where the issue is. Have someone push, and pull on the steering wheel while you look at the steering box coupler. People have been known to put the slider blocks in the coupler wrong. If it's not there, you need to find out where the play is, then figure out why.
Missing the retainer clip for the upper bearing or the column's 2 piece shaft has sheared it's plastic "pins".
I know I'm coming into the conversation late; Sorry. Sent my gear box down to the company outside of St. Louis last year. (69 RR) There was a lot of play and a lot of leaking. They called after they received it and said they don't rebuild Mopars; but since I already sent it they would rebuild do it. Spent $500 on the rebuild and shipping. After I got it back, installed; went for a front end alinement. It's not leaking and there is less play; but you can grab the steering rod just outside of the gear box and turn it back and forth, and the rod moves in and out of the gear box as you turn it. The alignment tech said it was too much. Should I have it rebuilt again; or settle for a rebuilt from Summit for around $150.
