I have been watching FB for a quad

There's a Marantz quad on the Portland CL for $1100 at the moment.

thats awesome! those transformers, no wonder they sound so clean! does that have a standby button for warm up! just thinking if you had it turned up last time using it and just turned it on again! I know my Traynor custom reverb will blow a fuse if you whack a chord before it's warmed up!

It’s got a soft start thermistor. The on/off switch is part of the volume control. It has to be turned down before it clicks off.

Can anybody tell me what this is? I noticed some black residue on the bottom outside of the reciever that looks like something got hot and melted. I took the cover off my tx5000 and sprayed some Deoxit on some moving parts; nothing works now.

capacitor , something melted doesn't sound good, in fact it doesn't sound at all you say! way over my pay scale, im only a start/run capacitor hack!

That black cylinder is a capacitor, as printed it's a 15,000 uF. It's likely liquid filled, which could have leaked. Usually attached with two or three soldered connections on the bottom.

Take that picture to an electrical supply store, they'll get you matched up. Or undo the two screws holding it on, you might find it easy to access the wires below and remove it easily.

you can replace it with another 15000uf, but voltage rating must be equivalent or higher!

would this capacitor have anything to do with the left-right channels? the right channel does give up after about an hour of play. i never play loud but i can play with the volume switch and get both channels back online.

the thing has fired back up and is playing but somehow i've got the tuner out of sync.

^ never seen that before with digital and linear channel display!likely the other end of thread slipped on the pulley for linear,should be an easy fix. channel loss got no clue, same as how does a digital clock not keep the right time!

I remember those... Right at the point analog tuning was going away... Only a couple manufacturers did it & not for very long...

If messing with the volume, tone or balance controls brings the channel back, it's likely just a dirty potentiometer.

The above "Fader Lube" is the fix for that, but getting it into where it can do it's job can be tricky, depending on the design of the pot in question.

I've had good luck in the past, just vigorously working the pot back and forth for about 30-60 seconds.
If that doesn't work, it's time for the spray. Although sometimes you still have to work it afterwards to get it clean.

Which tuner reading is correct?
If the digital display is correct, it's likely you can carefully "slip" the tuning cord on the pulleys or the needle to get it right.

Audiokarma, would likely yield the exact procedures, however.

A little spray and work it into the pot(s).
Not a good idea to get it on the variable capacitor.
Use an air blaster to get dust out of the plates if you have scratchy tuning.

This is what anyone on a video call with me sees. All stuff I found on ebay except for a lot of the tapes which I've had since new and the cassette holders which I 3D printed. Its sparked some interesting convos with coworkers etc, the 8 track tapes came from a former coworker who got a bunch from an inlaw.

forgot about this old girl in my tractor/sled shop,which is a current mess from a lot of projects on the go! system tough as nails sounds awesome!I had to wipe it down to read what it was! lived its whole life in shop since 1980, seeing 85F in summer,-35f in winter, dampness,shop and grinding dust , indestructable!
Nikko alpha ii poweramp, beta ii preamp, gamma 1 tuner, 700 deck which may or not still work haven't used it in years!4 speakers still sound good too but there not quite as old!
The nikko's were overbuilt for the price! old laptop beside the vise is my music library!

That's what I do- use a "you can just have it" laptop as an MP3 music source.

In my humid FL shop they last about 2 years.

All of the PCs I've used for music servers have been named "AudioFileX", where X is the generation of unit for that purpose.

I am currently on 9.

I have a marantz quad 8 track player, but no quad receiver. I saved it from a rummage sale for $5. I have been watching FB for a quad, sometimes the Pioneer version shows up but the ones for fair money end up sold to flippers while I am at work around here. I will eventually stumble into one I am sure

Too bad you’re not closer, I have one that needs repairs that I’ll probably never get to.
