Stories about selling or 'offers' for your old rides?

Not a car story but this is true.
My boss calls and tells me 3 guys are coming to look at a D8T we had in the yard. He had not met them. Sure enough in a little while these three guys dressed in black suits walk in. Their names where Jimmy, Tony and Marco. I swear they were mafia. Anyway we answered all their questions and they wanted to know the history of the machine. I printed out the life of it and they were impressed. They asked if could do that with anything. I told as long as they had serial numbers, and they produced about 3. I ran the history and gave them printouts.
Then they wanted to know if we take cash there! I was waiting for briefcase full of money. I told them they had to go to the main office for that.
Then a couple days later the UPS truck backs up and un unloads two refrigerated boxes at first I was afraid to open it.
Turns out it was cheesecake from some renowned place in the Bronx or somewhere around there
Jimmy Tony and Marco sent it
I'll never forget it, can't make it up

In all my years of driving Chargers I'm frequently asked if I'll sell but I've never had anyone throw out a huge crazy number like other people claim. Some classic car owners say they have 2 or 3 solid standing offers so not sure what to think about all that.
Wouldn’t doubt there are serious, nice offers. I was at a small beer depot near me last summer with my old car. An older gent (who knows anymore, could be around my age) was arriving with his wife just after I did. He stopped me as he stared at the car liking it a bunch walking around it. He asks if I wouldn’t mind opening the hood. I wasn’t in a hurry; it was a hot day and was tired working in the yard. An excuse to take a longer break. He was really liking it and asked if I’d be interested in selling.

Well maybe I’m not alone here with the infrequent thoughts to sell and get something else. So I said I might if I’d get a decent price for it. He said what would you need for it. Replied probably around 30 grand mentioning what I got in the restoration. This actually would be a good offer for the car despite the investment. He calls out for his wife in their car to come look at it. Then asks for my phone number. He seemed pretty interested as we parted company.

Meanwhile, this prodded me to recall all the hours & cash I put into restoring it, making it the way I wanted this ride to be, nit-picky work as anyone restoring their cars knows well. Two days later he calls wanting to buy the car (any price haggling not done yet). I got cold feet declining to sell it. Damn, I’ve had this car since ’95 and it’s like my baby.

Only sad deal is NO body in the family has a smiggin of interest in the car! If I still have it when I croak it’s going to be dumped. I’d feel better knowing the car would go to a guy who likes it much as I do. Lol, then again when I’m gone I have a feeling I won’t give a chit.

Yeah I get that. I was in a similar situation to a degree with the X. No one in my family had any interest in the car whatsoever save one ultra loose cannon nephew that it just wasn’t going to - ever. I’ve already told the story here a few times so I won’t take up any more data space - but it went to one of my very besties with a caveat that his extremely interested son gets it after he croaks. I feel good about all that vs someone unknown to me, my family or circle. Mission accomplished.

If you want it, act like it! Money talks and bullshit walks!

I got a nephew like this. Nutty - immature like a 12 year old at around 35 and has inability or not interested in learning from past mistakes. Drives like a mad man. One time he picked me up to visit my dad while he was in the hospital in his new AWD Subaru (stick shift) on a snowy day; roads were lousy. Guess he wanted to show off sliding and spinning on the roads the entire ride there. Later he ended up losing the car cuz motor seized up...perpetual redlining + my guess.

At a car show last summer a guy is looking at my car and asks what I think it is worth. I said 40K. He then asks if I would take 40 for it. No idea if he was serious or not, but I declined.

Reminds me of the price list at one of our long closed old school junk yards where you ask how much something is and the answer was always "how much you got?" So that's the one I give

How much for your car?
How much you got?

Driving my wife's Challenger down Woodward. A guy pulls up next to me in a Ferrari and asks me to pull over. He asks if the car is for sale. I say not really. He ask's what it would take to buy it. I answer I don't know. He says will you take $50K? I sad I'd have to ask my wife. He gives me his number and says "let me know". I come home and tell my wife. She says if we sell it you'll just have to start over cause you know they'll be an empty slot in the garage. We still have it.

You couldn't duplicate that for 50K today.

Had a guy offer me $500 cash for my old van....got totally insulted when I wouldn't accept it. I thought a running, driving, licensed vehicle should be worth more than that.....

Didn't hurt my feelings(not even one little bit....) when he turned and walked away.... :)

Don’t know what year, looks like it could be close to 1985. Depending on options, and miles some are asking 3500.00-5000.00 Canadian.

Retro mod it and ask $150,000..

If I polish our 85 360 350 Chassis raised roof B class 70,000 miles do you think I could ask 160,000 Ha, probably a cocktail conversion would be worth more. Three years in a row, people came along and wanted to buy our in AZ and New Mexico.Not for sale.

The very first time I had my 71 Cuda out some guy came over and started to closely inspect the car and ask a lot of questions. He then asks how much to buy the car. I said the car was fresh and not for sale. He was persistent about a price. So I said nothing less than what I had into it. He said that was too much money and did not leave him enough room for profit when he resold it to his client. Told him to keep walking.

It's an '83, got the 318-2bbl, and only 143K actual miles....even still has the factory original carpet in the cargo area and the spare has never been on the ground.

I ran into a jerk like that years ago when I sold my Chrysler 300F. He said, your price is pretty close to retail, I can't make anything on that, and I said, so why are you wasting time talking to me?

I find guys like this friggin wacko to have the nads to say this! Ahh, I’m supposed to sell you my ride at what, wholesale so YOU can make money on it? WDF? For the last 25 years I’ve never traded in a vehicle opting to sell it myself. Trade in offers are insane and some of the ‘push-pull in” deals dealers advertise are a scam. Lol, they just pad the price on the vehicle you’re trying to buy. What I’ve done though is play the game with the trade in price first…then I say ok, forget my trade in, now what ya got for the new vehicle cost.

edited disclaimer 2/10/2022;
I messed up the dates, sell date especially
much later (like early-mid 90s)
the story is pretty much the same still...
sorry

at Reno H.A.N. 1982-ish
some dude 'I never saw before'
He loved it came up 'out of the blue & offered me $50k cash'
as it sat (still wasn't completely done, still needed paint)
I 1st told the guy;
"No"...
he said;
"I respect that & walked away"
I was sort of cruising it, from one parking lot to another
can't go too far only had a VW/Scirocco radiator & small electric pump
Thing was wicked sounding/ground-pounding
1,000+ hp BBC 498cid sort of a low buck P/S combo
on Injected Alcohol 7.98 @ 169 with that combo,
M/T SS Sportman 31x18 DOT tires, black tracking the whole way
at the Worlds Fastest Street Car Super Chevy Sunday...
Where he 1st saw it...
I pulled into another casino parking lot...
& the guy waved me down, to park next to another car
Nice Cobra, his AC Cobra

we talked a lil' bit, like an hour or so
we exchanged info, he was sort of a broker
but cool guy

some like 4+ (more like 10) years later
I was selling off much of my 'all-out race stuff'
cars trailers parts etc.
downsizing & moving south from Concord, to SanJose
& then eventually to Anchorage/Palmer Alaska
(back to Ca. to Turtle Creek, Concord until late 90's)

In about 1986-ish (more like early - mid 90's)
so I called him, asked if he was still interested
he said;
"yes & he still remembered the car"...
I told him;
"$100k for everything, truck trailer car"
he said;
"no to the truck & trailer" part
He didn't want to ship or move it...
he then said;
"how much for just the car",
I said;
"I want $70k"
he didn't bat an eye, & countered with;
"he said $65k cash "...

I told him;
"that if he's for real, bring it to my address, within a few days
it was like Wed. he was at my house Sat. with cash $65,000

He already had the car sold to some guy in Germany,
I didn't even care how much he was going to sell it for
it was about 2.5 times what I had into it to build
& I had raced it for 4 years already, it was a badass proven car...
Best of 7.20 @ 188 with a 526cid Mastodon Alum. Hemi 8:71 Blown Alcohol Inj.
it didn't go with the car, the 498cid injected alcohol combo did...

Never heard anything about it ever again
or the guy
I tried to contact him a few times, never got a response again...

Good point, if I sell and get my price, it is no longer mine and I shouldn’t care. I have no longer any control. If I have helped someone and they dump whatever for a profit, it they won’t get anything from me unless a have a huge payout.
