Hey Jeff, welcome to the site! I'm an old guy that's been all over the world with the military, I have not gone wrong with being polite, in any language. Most of us oldsters have more bark than bite. Like others have said, holding out yer mitt and introducing yourself and asking if he's a MOPAR guy might have been the way. It would work with me and I'm notorious for being downright scary. We all want to be respected and to show off our cars and shops and such. Just say'in. Post some pics of that tire shreddin street beast.....
