I'm wondering what guys are using for subframe connectors? I like the us tool ones in the other post, but could I get away with making some out of rectangluar tubing like 2 inch by 2 1/2 inch 1/8 wall. would they strong enough? just some thoughts, they are going on a 65 coronet.

Yes they will work fine, however they are either going to hang down under the car unless you cut the floor to recess them into the cockpit in which case they are going to make bumps under your floor covering. That is the beauty of the USTool ones as they are cut to form the contour of the floor and be flat with the subframes. The look like they are factory after painting from the bottom and there is nothing protuding into the cockpit floor.

US car Tool Connectors

I just put these in my 68 GTX and spent about two hours each making them fit perfect before mig welding them in. They are the best thing going, and when done, they look "Factory". I drilled some holes and plug-welded them also. Just under $200.00 with shipping and you can't beat them.

Those contoured connectors look awesome and reasonably trouble free from what I've heard. Our altered has a totally one-off floor, therefore we needed something custom. I used 2x2 box tubing and welded a plate to my front cross member for added strength. In the rear I notched a section out of the rear sub-frame and slip fit the tubing in welded on three sides and plug welded. Of course we did run them through the floor and welded material on both sides. I'm pretty sure it will get the job done.

Just bought a set from chassis engineering for my 65 Coronet, havent welded them in yet but do fit good.

thanks for the replies, and photos, I think with my birthday right around the corner I am going to call us tool, those connectors look really nice, I have been thinking about the 2x2 tube, but the cut ones look so nice. zyzzyx are you going to weld along the whole length of the floor pan?

Mine dont hang down too low. Ron

Yes, I did MIG them in with .030 wire, and painted the undercarriage with QQ1 DuPont IMRON. Now THAT looks nice. Lotsa work, but worth it. Now for the rest!!! Good luck!

Sorry, Don't have the hang of these pic's yet!

That looks great, just got to get a rotisserie. Nice!!

just ordered my frame connectors, just wondering what I should coat the insides of them with. looks like in some of their photos they used por15. I figured on a weld through primer on the areas were I am welding, maybe epoxy primer on the rest?

I had mine blasted to take the scale off before i welded them in, and will spray a body wax in through the holes when i'm done. Taking the scale off assures good primer adhesion.

first; it dosen't matter what they are going into, its how much power and how are you getting it there. all the strength will be in the wall size. rectangular is stonger. you or your buddie who can, will be good with what you describe above. rick

Connectors and more.....

Here is something a little creative in case you want to go all the way with 4-Link while you are down there !

I'm wondering if those really trick contoured subframe connectors will stand up to lifting from a jack??? Never had laid my hands on them yet. I know the ones I put in Moshers customer cars will stand up to the occasional floorjack abuse (although I NEVER suggest jacking a car up in the middle!!!).

Subframe connectors vs floorjack

I would say YES! They are made from .125 thick material, and are welded to both front & rear sub-frames. They are also rectangular, and when welded to the floor pan form a complete box which is very strong. Wish I invented them!

Just got the connectors on tuesday, I have to get the seats and carpet out, and clean up the floor pan and the regulator on my welder took a dump. Moose the four link looks good, but alittle much for me right now.

zyzzyx, Those look really nice! I did not know they made that style of subframe connector I think I am going to put a set of those on my 69 Charger
(It's on a rotiserre as well! gotta love em'!) But your pic of the underside fully painted with those connectors it looks factory!!!! I had a set of old MP connectors on a 71 Challenger and did not like them because you could see them under the car when you stood back and looked at it!
