They are crutches for handicapped people that snow ski.

Someone that lost use of a leg and is mono skiing. Arm brace skis.. replaces using poles. Like a seaplane with sponsons.

I have my sister's K2's in one of my marine cans.. same vintage, about 1976.

My friend Deb has used them for 50 years after a knee injury. She currently works 50 hour weeks on ski patrol at age 76. We both use the conventional versions for car shows.

That basic crutch configuration has been around for 100 years, and is unbeatable for irregular terrain. It's practically non existent in the US, probably the result of stigma associated with the 1950s March of Dimes campaigns. The adjustable versions, patented in the 1950s, lent themselves well to outrigger installation. Deb was one of the first to use them back in the day.
