I've used the search function and while I find loads of references to the seal everyone seems to know the answer to my question so its never posed or answered.

I'm fitting a new/old trans to my car to replace one with a cracked casing round the starter motor. New trans has been rebuilt but has no output shaft seal, so I ordered a Timken 7300s. This seal has a notch on the outer rim and a small hole in the extended rubber seal on the opposite side of the notch. Which way up should I install it? Is the hole a breather and therefore lives at the top, or a drain and therefore lives at the bottom? I believe its a breather and should live at the top but wanted to be sure before I install - might only be a $7 part but shipping and taxes and the value of the British pound at the moment make that an expensive part! Thanks.

I would think if needed as a breather, hole down would still perform the function as such anyway.

Perfect, thanks. I'm learning on the job here and really appreciate the support!

The surface on the rear contacting the slip yoke does not seal tight so if moisture gets in, it can drain out.
