I was changing the oil in my charger yesterday and got thinking, if there was a fan shroud in here I might not be able to get the filtre out without taking something apart.
It’s already tricky enough to get a filtre full of oil in and out and install horizontally. In fact, before I bought the repro battery tray, there was some other kind of tray in there and I had to put the filtre between fan blades and rotate the fan as I pulled the filtre out.
Anybody versed in this? I’m close to pulling the trigger on a repro fan shroud but before spending $600 I’d like to know if this will be an issue.
By the way, this is a 69 charger with 440 and 22” rad.
Thanks

I never had a issue getting my oil filter out. 69 RT charger or 70 Bee. Both had fan shrouds, Both 440 cars. I did spill oil

Let it drain and lift it out.. That said, I have none (5 big blocks) that I don't have one spot I can't slide the filter out the bottom.

My sway bar and trans cooler lines are blocking the path. The only way in or out that I’ve found is between the rad, power steering pump and battery

Same situation for me and it stopped me from putting a shroud on. My cooling is good anyway. I've got the bigger 26" or whatever AC radiator. No chance I could get the filter out without dropping the bar or taking the shroud off.

Why put oil in the new filter?
Some say fill it, some say don’t worry about it. I put about a half quart in. It doesn’t really spill out when installing but that’s not my main concern. There’s oil everywhere in my engine bay and garage floor haha!
Is my sway bar not stock?

I cut up a windshield washer bottle and make a low profile drain trough. I have power steering, transmission cooler lines, sway bar, and a shroud and the filter comes out without removing anything.

Now, the new oil filter gets primed by filling it about half way and letting it sit for awhile. I'll grease zerks, lube hinges, wipe off the underside, etc while the oil filter is soaking up the prime.

Then quickly invert it around and put it on. Never spilled a drop.

Not sure why you can't pull it out somewhere, nothing is tighter than my Superbird and it's not an issue.

As for prefilling.. nonsense..

Take an empty filter and poke it around here and there, my Superbee is actually the worst.. there is ONE spot the filter will come past the sway bar.

Ok but where exactly does your filtre go in and out? Between sway bar and core support?

Like I said above. Take an empty filter and poke it around until you find that one spot it will come out. I have one spot on the 69 Bee... it's the worst of all our cars. '70 sway bar is further back on the Bird and an easy removal with rad shroud. '66 Hemi is easy. Wife's 383 Formula S Barracuda is doable as well...

If space is a problem, you can use the shorter Fram PH43, or equivalent. I find with the 440 in my '67 R/T, with power steering, I have to unscrew the filter, stand it up, and work it out through the side cut out in the K frame. There must be old B-engine designers still giggling in their graves about this!

I use the wix 51515 but one time I used the short wix (can’t remember the number) and it didn’t make a difference. It was long as it was wide and still didn’t fit anywhere (Yes, I realize how that sounds haha!)

I pull mine out from the top. I have a fan shroud but not that pesky power steering pump. Tons of room up top to break it loose, let it drain in my trough, flip it up and pull it out.
