I’m going through the tear down and rebuild of steering and suspension on my ‘71. The power steering gear appears physically in good shape with no leaks, but the car was not in running condition and has been sitting for a very long time.

Should I just assume it needs a rebuild or replacement or are there any tests/inspections that can be done to see if it might be ok to clean it up and continue using as-is?

Tough call. A lot depends on your level of reconstruction of the car. I see 3 options. 1- Run it as is. 2-Put the upper shaft seal and pitman seals in. 3-Get a replacement or send it out for rebuild.

Yeah, that makes sense. Not doing a full concourse resto, and trying to do a lot myself. Intending her to be an occasional cruiser…
