The Argument for More Roundabouts

My one trip to Ireland, driving from the wrong side of car, wrong side of street THEN approached one of these “traffic circles” on a very busy 4-laner and suddenly the sh!t got serious.
After that I told my wife she was the navigator, had to read the signs and give me directions. My job, I told her, was not to hit anything!
It worked out quite well after that although We did find ourselves on the right hand side of the road a few times.
That being said my opinion is they are a great improvement for traffic flow.
That burst of orange and Rebel Flag had the roundabout figured out. I shared that immediately with friends.

There is a learning curve, no pun intended. Being t-boned sucks.

The outermost lane is for, say an immediate “right” turn. The inner lanes are to process to “exit 2” which is straight ahead and then “exit 3” which is a left turn.

Drivers have to figure this out and don’t worry the other experienced drivers will help you out by rudely beeping their horns. Ask me how I know.

I live near Scranton Pa.
Ok, you can stop laughing now.
A few years ago getting to the AVP airport was simple. Get off the Interstate, make 2 left turns and you're there. PennDot magicians installed 3 roundabouts in that location to ease the congestion including the one immediately at the shortened ramp off the interstate. Lots of trucks have overrun that one and crashed. If you can make it through the first one alive, the 2nd and 3rd ones had to have airplane silhouettes painted in the lanes you need to be in to find the airport. All 3 of these "improvements" are within a 1/4 of a mile. Absolutely brilliant!
However leaving the airport, you locate the Exit, turn right and you're on the Interstate.
Apparently there was only an issue getting into the airport.

I used to think they were stupid, but seeing that most drivers can't handle a 4-way stop, I now believe they're an improvement.

Not a big fan but it's better than-

The "diverging diamond"- great idea or ridiculous over engineering?

Initially I hated the roundabouts. But there is a route I regularly take - 4-lane road. It had many traffic lights and you were often stopped at a few when there was no traffic on the crossroad. Now that the roundabouts are in you can buzz along the entire route at a decent pace and only have to stop at one or two for traffic. Even in rush hour they're much quicker to get through than waiting for traffic lights. They can be confusing to people who don't use them often but as more and more are installed things will improve. In reality a bad driver is a bad driver - roundabouts or not. How often do you see people slowing down at intersections when the light is green !!

My biggest fear is that I will be driving down a road I've been using my whole life that used to go straight through, and if I'm day dreaming or otherwise not paying attention, I will drive right through.

Saw my first one in Billings. I was towing a car so I didn't enjoy it. First one I'd seen and it turned out okay, but I didn't like it in the moment. Haven't seen one since, so, no real opinion.

If your not playing DEFENSE , you will get smoked
They have been popping up round here for the last few years. Yes it takes a bit to get used to.

The Diverging Diamond was installed on a overpass in Henderson Nevada. Many accidents and it's been there for 5 years now.It can be confusing if you are not paying attention.

Keep that **** in Europe with the go cart sized cars, and take the metric system with you!!!!
