Ever since i could remember, the coolest car when i was a child was my uncle Micky's 74 Roadrunner. He bought it brand new in 75 as a dealer holdover. It had a 400 and a slap stick. Over the years he put several potent big blocks in it, the last being a 71 440 6bbl out of the wrecked GTX in 1985. In the late 70's he gave it some time period flash with a desert scene and the coyote chasing the roadrunner painted on both doors. There was also a scene painted on the power bulge hood where the coyote had the roadrunner by the neck saying "Beep Beep Your ***" I grew up dreaming one day i would also have a yellow 74 Roadrunner. Uncle Micky was the one who ran the family farm and at the age of 10, i started going there as soon as school was out and would work every summer until school started.
The summer i turned 14 was the summer i got my drivers license. And one day pulling into the farm yard with the Steiger after a day of seeding the upper 1/4 with flax, i see a 74 yellow and black Roadrunner parked next to the Massy 44. I about **** my pants..... Uncle Micky said all my hard work is paying off and it was ALL MINE!!! He bought it from a gal who was the original owner. It had 91,000 miles on it and had one previous paint job. It was a base 318 (4bbl added) with 3 speed on the floor. I was in heaven. So, at the end of that summer school was about to start and Micky said i could take her back home to Fargo. I was pumped to drive it to school the first day. All these years i'd been bragging how i'm gonna have a yellow 74 Roadrunner one day and by this time all my friends thought i was full of ****. Well that first day of school was a jaw dropper...... When i pulled into the school parking lot it was all rubber necks. I showed them... This was one proud kid.
I continued to work on the farm every summer until i was 17. At that time Uncle Micky decided to rent out the land instead working it himself. After all these years i still have my Beeper. I just finished up an 8 year build on it and finally got to drive her again for the first time since 2005 last month. Like most old cars, she's never done. I'm currently updating the top end shooting for 700hp (which is a pretty stout small block).
I love all Mopars and i've owned several over the years, but this one is very near and dear to me. This car made me the man i am today. It taught me my work ethics and that hard work pays off.
Unfortunately, uncle Micky lost interest in his car and never even drove it after the 440 6bbl was installed. It just sat in the barn for several years until he finally decided to sell it in 2003. One thing is for sure, i will NEVER sell my car. She is in the family for good.......
