The Pride Of The Navy

The battle of Okinawa was medieval. Probably the icing on the cake for dropping the A bomb

I would think the ships that took the brunt of the Kamikaze were the ships on the picket line, the destroyers and destroyer escorts who were the early warning for the fleet. I’m sure the priority targets were the carriers, troop ships an destroyers. Not very many places to run for cover on one of those destroyers.

The number of planes that attacked the Yamato, one ship, was comparable to the number of japanese planes that attacked Pearl Harbor. Well over three hundred planes were detailed to attack Yamato and her escorts, and her explosion after capsizing was considered one of the largest in history, prior to the atomic bomb.

she carried a massive amount of black powder bags for those 18 inch guns

I believe she had a sister ship that we captured just after the surrender. I read where we had a good look over and determined that their fire control systems for the main guns were pretty antiquated. I believe it was towed out to the pacific and used as a target during the H bomb tests.

No offence, but that is a little bit wrong. There were originally five "Yamato's" planned, three built, two as battleships, Yamato and Musashi, and one converted to a carrier before completion, the Shinano. Shinano was sunk by an american sub, the largest ship in history sunk by a sub. Musashi was sunk by carrier aircraft, same as Yamato, a few months earlier.
The ship you are thinking of was the Nagato, only capital ship of the japanese navy to survive the war. It was a late ww1 vessel with 8 16"guns. As an older warship, her technical details were studied before using her as a target at bikini.
Technical details of the Yamato class are almost impossible to verify, she was built in total secrecy, and most drawings and build specs were destroyed, prior to the expected invasion of japanese home islands.
At one time it was thought that the only surviving photos of Yamato were taken by the US navy.
