You didn't buy the car yesterday and it wasn't a running driving and roadworthy car for $7000. ALL prices have gone up.Just got an updated quote from SST for a TKX kit with hydraulic T/O....
Almost $ 7000 bucks.
That's more than I paid for the running car, the rebuilt 383, the second hand Eddy heads, the new 3.73 3rd member( that I did have to reset the gears), the second hand A833, the bolt on fiberglass 5" A12 hood, 727 kit, 2700 converter and a bunch of other small parts......combined.
That settles it....GVO is in my future.
SEVEN GRAND! FML!
20+ years ago I bought my first '70 Charger for $1700 and drove it home along with using it as a 130 mile a day commuter for a month. In 2019 I bought another '70 Charger for $5000 and had to replace the entire front structure, rebuild the suspension-brakes-steering-engine, install a fuel system, wiring and HVAC before it was roadworthy.
Yeah, the Tremec kits are not cheap but you're getting all new parts that they source and ship to your home.
Gear Vendors is a crutch. If you can get the electronics to work, you're still stuck with a measly .78 overdrive ratio which isn't that great.
They know that have a corner on the market so they act like the only gas station in town. They give you two choices.
Take it OR leave it.
I installed one of the last of the TKO kits before they switched to using the TKX.
Tremec 5 speed conversion in a 1970 Charger
My kit included the drive shaft and was shipped to me for under $6000. This was over 4 years ago though. EVERYthing has jumped in cost for reasons not discussed outside the Political forum. Silver Sport raised prices but left out the drive shaft to try to keep the sticker shock in check. Overall, you're still paying more than ever and yes, it sucks. Who is to blame? As an aside, if the minimum wage is raised to $58 an hour, is McDonalds to blame for a $20 Big Mac ?
In late 2022, a friend of mine (In post #18 above) bought a kit, we installed it here.
Tremec TKX 5-Speed Conversion
Driving an automatic with a Gear Vendors is a lot different than driving a car with a 5 speed manual. My red car has had both. The Tremec is a whole lot more fun EXCEPT in Los Angeles traffic!
