Thought I would share this photo with you...

The 1963 Dodge that I purchased came with some interesting work already done to it. It will be a real pain in the azz to remove it all BUT I am pretty sure that it helped to preserve the car and sheet metal.

The black that you see is "Bed Liner" and its been on there for 10 years or more. Both the engine compartment and the trunk floor were sprayed with it. I have already removed most of what was in the trunk because I found a loose area and just started lifting it from there. The sheet metal under the liner in the trunk is like new with no rust.

The engine compartment may be tougher due to the heat but I have already located a place below the master cylinder that was loosened by brake fluid. It can be removed with stripper so if it comes to that I will have to do it. The engine will have to come out as will everything in the engine compartment.

Well it's going to be a lot of work to remove it. I hope the idiot that did that is now in jail. I had one like that many years ago where a guy used a product called "Spatter" in the engine compartment. UGLY!! It was a rubber/tar type of stuff. Stripper wouldn't begin to touch it. I ended up putting heat to it using a small handheld propane torch and a puddy knife and scapped every last bit of that Ugly stuff off. Took around 30 hours to do it then media blasted it clean. I feel your pain!! :icon_hang:

You got to do what you got to do, sometimes you just want to shake your head and wonder why.

Update

Went out for a short drive today to burn off the gas in my old tank. New tank, strap, super stock springs, shackels and shocks going in this week. When I got home I opened the hood, picked a spot and just started pulling, after about an hour this is what I had. It wasn't all that hard to remove, finger nails and a pair of channel locks. The sad new is I didn't find the fender tag and I broke a nail! I will have to remove all the electronic from the firewall to get the rest of it off. It appears they plugged all unused holes before they sprayed it with black primer, the white you see is where the bed liner pulled the primer off. Afterwards everything was bolted on except for the original washer nozzels and hose which was sprayed over. The metal is spotless, no rust at all can be found.
