1968 383 rebuild. Two new timing sets (Summit & 440 Source) and both have 5/16" slack in them.
Any suggestions?

I did not have it align bored but, I don't know if a previous owner did.

There are companies that offer a chain and sprockets for engines that are line bored. Do you need it? I would say no. You could call 440 source and discuss this with them for an opinion. Did you degree the cam?

This is normal for Chrysler engines. Sometimes I can get a timing set from EPWi that will be better, but not always. The thing is, when the engine is running, the slack on the draw side is taught so it is fine. If your buying sets to minimize the slop, you're fighting a losing battle as this is the norm for roller chains. If you got an OEM timing set, the link belt will probably be tighter. Also, a -0.005" or -0.010" chain set is not going to make it any better.

That's not loose. This is loose! When they rub on the cover then you should be concerned.

3/8" is the number to replace! If you have the knowledge, measure the center to center distance.
They used to make -0.005 under timing sets for blocks that were line honed. There may be a few
left out there???

I sent an email to Rollmaster about an undersized timing set. Have not heard back yet.

Regardless of the timing set you need to check the cam timing. ( Degree it)
You may find the single keyway sprocket won't yield the correct cam timing.

I have 3 engines with Rollmaster chains. None had slack on assembly. Had 3 years on my stroker SB, torn down for another reason, the chain was still tight.
