Tired of the 5 speed

It sounds like the tci built 727 you have may not really be what you want anymore, I would look for a stock rebuilt unit and sell off the racier one, you'll probably end up money ahead

Title of this thread should be in another thread called" Thing never said by a MOPAR owner":poke::screwy::drinks:

@adam76! you might be better off, selling both transmissions, and getting this from Silver Sport Transmission. It’s a newer 4 speed automatic GM based, it comes with everything to install. You’ll still have the convenience of an automatic with an overdrive.

Wow man. Yeah this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for. There is no price listed. Scared to even know how much. But definitely what I want. No questions ask. Dang good find man. Thanks. A lot bro.

you don't need to use all the gears! just drive it like a 2speed 2n4! my RR with a bench when had 3 in front just used 1-3 so nobody got hurt!

373 gears can’t. 1st and second high rpms. 3rd and 4th decent.

The last time I checked, if I’m not mistaken, it was between $6000-$7000 at the time. I bet you can sell your 5 speed and your automatic to cover most of that. Is your 727 number matching to your car?

Is a trade of your car for a similar make/model and build but with an automatic transmission an option?

I understand that these cars can be almost family. But yours with a Tremex 5 speed would have an upper hand with a simular 727 automatic car by monetary value.

Or maybe time to expand your family by one?

Just thought I would offer an alternative option suggestion.

That Silver Sport 4 speed auto is mega pricey, I looked into it. And if you ever want to upgrade your engine, that trans can only handle 600-650HP, which is fine for most guys.

I would just have the TCI trans rebuilt by a local reputable builder. I've never understood the term 'slushbox' for an automatic. If it's slushy it's not built right.
I had a '70 Challenger with a Tremec 5 speed and didn't care for it. I normally use a 727 with a reverse manual valve body and a 'good' converter. Car will absolutely rip with this combo.

I'd have to guess that the majority of Mopar enthusiasts are not dedicated drag racers.
Some of us seem to like to drive the cars and having an overdrive transmission really makes it easier.

I agree that the debate between manual and auto from a pure performance level is moot. Pro Stock only uses clutch less manuals is by rule. In a higher HP application? The best a manual can do is approach an auto's performance. But in lower HP? It does take some power out of engine performance to turn the hydraulics of the auto.

Thus I am a believer that having an auto in a classic stock (or near stock) car does take away from some of the classic car street experience.

It's all personal preference. If you want overdrive and auto, you can use an A518 or a Gearvendors.

If you have good torque you can get away with highway gearing. My big block Duster could be driven on the street all day long with 3.23 gears, I drove it to Dragway42 an hour away, ran 10.69 at 124mph, and drove it home.

If you want to stay with a manual, a TKX or a built T56 and a hydraulic clutch will drive pretty nice on the street.

Too bad you are so far away from me. I have everything rebuilt/new to put a console shift 727 auto in my 68 Charger, I would swap it all into your car in exchange for your parts.

Yeah that would be nice. It’s just not smooth shifting at all. Like driving a
An old f350 4 speed. Clutch is so hard. Just want to press the gas and go. I know I still have all the old parts. Somewhere. Thanks for reply.
I agree on the shift quality. I don't see how anyone coukd ever sped shift one of these. My friend had a 64 Fury with a Max Weddge clone motor I built with a Kiesler 5 speed. I drove it many times. My 833 shifts way nicer. In fact my NV4500 in my diesel 3500 shifts better.

A tough to push in clutch is one thing. A hard to shift or stiff shifting transmission is another. If you are tired of shifting, a 5 speed won't help but just make it worse. I might need a new knee or hip but I won't get them replaced just because of my 4 speed car that is no fun to drive any more. Give me an old Mopar with an automatic please.
