904 is small block 727 can be for either. The bell housing portion for a big block would be larger. And starter location is different as you can see here. Found these pictures on the web.

904 transmission is about 25 lbs lighter then the 727 and it doesn't take as much horsepower to turn the 904, so that is a bonus. With the parts available you can build a stout 904 that can handle 600 horsepower with no problems. I have a friend with a 408 stroker that make 471 HP and 498 Torque and he has a 904 transmission and he drives the heck out of it. He's been driving that car for 5 years since he installed the 408/904 combination and has had no problems with the 904.
